The Penguins started strong but wilted in the later stages against the Avalanche Friday night in the front half of their back-to-back. Pittsburgh got goals from Evgeni Malkin (his fourth) and Bryan Rust (his third) in the opening nine minutes of the game. That gave the Penguins a 2-0 lead but they didn’t maintain that advantage. Pittsburgh surrendered five unanswered goals to wind up on the wrong end of the scoreboard. Arturs Silovs made 27 saves for the Penguins, who were outshot 32-31, in the loss.

Pittsburgh started the season strong, tallying 13 goals in their first two games of the year, both wins. However, the Penguins crumpled since then, dropping two straight and five of their last six games after falling to Colorado.

The Penguins entered Friday night tied for 14th in the league in goals per game with 3.25 per contest. Pittsburgh stands 20th in goals against by allowing 3.25 goals per game last year. The Penguins are struggling with the man advantage, ranking 27th in the league by converting 14.8% of their opportunities with the man advantage. Meanwhile, they are 10th in the league in penalty killing. The Penguins successfully navigate 87% of their shorthanded situations.

In addition, Sergei Murashov (0-2-1, 2.99 GAA, .908 save percentage, shutout) is the projected starter in goal for the Penguins. Arturs Silovs got the start between the pipes Friday night against the Avalanche.

Vegas enters this contest on a roll with six wins in their last seven games. The Golden Knights improved to 4-1-0 at home on the season as they dropped the hammer on a struggling Calgary squad Thursday. In that game, Vegas got goals from Brett Howden (his third), Jack Eichel (his fifth, shorthanded) and Braeden Bowman (his second, on the power play) in the first two periods.

The third period was the Mark Stone show as he tallied a natural hat trick (his fourth, fifth and sixth of the year) to lead the Golden Knights to the win. His third goal came on the power play. Carter Hart made 28 saves for Vegas, who owned a 33-30 advantage in shots on goal, in the win.

Vegas stands 3rd in goals per game by averaging 3.89 goals per contest in the early going. Vegas is 6th in goals allowed by giving up an average of 2.44 goals per game this season. The Golden Knights are 7th in the league with the man advantage as they convert 25.7% of their power play opportunities. Vegas is below average in the penalty killing department, ranking 22nd as they successfully navigate 77.3% of their shorthanded situations.

Meanwhile, Carter Hart (4-2-0, 2.35 GAA, .911 save percentage) is the expected starter between the pipes for Vegas. If he doesn’t go, Adin Hill (3-0-0, 2.27 GAA, .901 save percentage) would be in net for the Golden Knights.

Penguins vs. Golden Knights Prediction: Over 6.5 (-115)

Pittsburgh saw the over hit in Friday night's contest with the Avalanche as Colorado scored five goals to earn the victory. That marked the fifth time in eight games this season that the Penguins went over the number. In addition, four of their five road tilts this season surpassed the number. Vegas, meanwhile, recorded seven overs in their first nine games of the year. The Golden Knights are explosive offensively and four of their five games on home ice surpassed the total. Look for another high-scoring affair that ends up cashing the over in this contest.

In addition, Stone has recorded at least three shots on goal in four of his last seven games. With Pittsburgh a little tired here, he generates chances and puts a fair amount of rubber on net.
