In Game 1 of the series, Vegas rallied to pick up a 5-4 victory, drawing first blood. Carolina rallied in Game 2, picking up a 4-3 overtime victory Thursday night to square the series. Meanwhile, Vegas won a wild Game 3, prevailing 5-4 in double overtime Saturday night at home. That gave them a 2-1 series lead. Will Carolina square things up or can Vegas take a commanding 3-1 series advantage? Let’s break down this Hurricanes vs. Golden Knights matchup.
Hurricanes Seek To Even Things Up
Carolina was flat for two periods, roared to life in the third and ended up falling in double overtime Saturday night. Therefore, the Hurricanes now trail 2-1 in the series and hope to get back in the win column to avoid heading home in a 3-1 series hole.
In Game 4, Carolina’s listless p\ay put them in a deficit. They managed to rally to force overtime but ended up losing in double overtime. Carolina owned a 7-2 shot advantage in the opening period but the teams skated off scoreless at the first intermission. In the second period, the Hurricanes lost the shot battle 14-5 and outscored 4-0 to trail by that margin after 40 minutes of action. The third period saw Carolina with a 13-9 advantage in shots and a 4-0 advantage on the scoreboard to knot things up at the end of regulation.
Jordan Martinook got Carolina on the board with his second goal of the postseason at 7:03. Assists went to Seth Jarvis and Logan Stankoven. Just 26 seconds later, Taylor Hall made it 4-2 with his sixth of the playoffs at 7:29. Sebastian Aho and Jackson Blake each drew assists on the marker. Only 13 seconds later, at 7:42, Jordan Staal cut the margin to 4-3 with his fifth goal of the playoffs. Jaccob Slavin and Eric Robinson drew the assists on the goal. Andrei Svechnkov tallied the equalizer with his fourth goal of the playoffs, on the power play, at 18:18. Staal and Aho drew the assists on that goal.
In the first overtime, Carolina lost the shot battle 7-6 with neither side lighting the lamp. During the second overtime, the Hurricanes lost the shot battle 3-2 and allowed the winning goal to end up with the loss. Frederik Andersen stopped 12 of 16 shots before getting pulled at the end of the second period. Brandon Bussi saved 18 of 19 shots in relief for the Hurricanes, who lost the shot battle 35-33, in the contest. As of Monday night, the Hurricanes have not named a starting goaltender.
Golden Knights Look to Earn a 3-1 Series Advantage
Vegas took a massive lead in Game 3, collapsed again in the third period and managed to survive with a double-overtime win. That saved them from a massive letdown and leaves them with a 2-1 series advantage entering this contest.
In Game 3, Vegas shook off a sluggish start and a massive meltdown to earn the victory. Vegas lost the shot battle by a 7-2 margin in the opening period but skated off with the game scoreless after 20 minutes. In the second period, the Golden Knights held a 14-5 advantage in shots and a 4-0 edge on the scoreboard to lead by that margin at the second intermission.
Tomas Hertl opened the scoring with his fifth goal of the playoffs, at 10:26, on the power play. Jack Eichel and Mitch Marner drew the assists. Only 16 seconds later, at 10:42, Marner made it 2-0 with his eighth of the playoffs. William Karlsson and Shea Theodore drew the assists. Marner added his second of the game and ninth of the playoffs at 14:32 for a 3-0 advantage. Brayden McNabb drew the lone assist on that marker. In addition, Marner capped the fastest hat trick in Stanley Cup Finals history with his third of the night and 10th of the playoffs at 16:52. Hertl drew the only assist on that marker with a 4-0 advantage.
The third period saw Vegas outshot 13-9 and outscored 4-0 to send the game to overtime. In the first overtime, the Golden Knights owned a 7-6 edge in shots with neither team scoring, keeping the game 4-4. During the second overtime, Vegas held a 3-2 shot advantage and scored the winning goal to secure the win. Theodore tallied his sixth goal of the playoffs at 5:38 to win it for the Golden Knights. McNabb and Brett Howden drew the assists on the winner. Carter Hart made 29 saves for the Golden Knights, who held a 35-33 edge in shots, in the win. Hart (14-5, 2.39 GAA, .914 save percentage) is slated between the pipes for Vegas again here.

The Hurricanes have to get off to an early start to put pressure on Vegas. It remains to be seen what Rod Brind’Amour does between the pipes as Andersen’s struggles are glaring in this series. He got away with it against Montreal as the Canadiens were gassed after Game 1. Meanwhile, Hart has his own issues in this series as he’s surrendered a dozen goals in three games. If it comes to backup goaltenders, you have more faith in Bussi than whoever Vegas would lean on here. Therefore, look for Carolina to even things up by prevailing here.
