- Under is 4-0 in the Blackhawks’ last four games overall
The Blackhawks managed to get back in the win column and end a three-game skid as they beat the Kings at home. Chicago has done most of their damage at home, however, as they are just 0-4-0 as the visiting team. On Tuesday night at home, they took care of business against the Kings. Roman Kantserov (his fifth of the season, on the power play) and Wyatt Kaiser (his first) tallied for Chicago. Spencer Knight stopped 25 shots for the Blackhawks, who owned a 27-26 advantage in shots on goal, in the win.
The Blackhawks entered Thursday 31st in the league in goals per game with 2.17 per contest. Chicago stands 30th in goals against by allowing 3.67 goals per game last year. The Blackhawks are struggling with the man advantage, ranking 31st in the league by converting 10.3% of their opportunities with the man advantage. Meanwhile, they are 17th in the league in penalty killing. The Blackhawks successfully navigate 78.4% of their shorthanded situations.
In addition, Spencer Knight (4-6-0, 3.23 GAA, .897 save percentage) is the projected starter in goal for the Blackhawks. Arvid Soderblom (0-2-0, 4.58 GAA, .820 save percentage) is the backup goaltender.
Red Wings Betting Trends
- Favorite is 6-1 in the last seven meetings between the teams
Detroit enters this contest on a roll nine of a possible 12 points in their last six games. The Red Wings improved to 2-1-2 on the road on the season as they edged the dangerous Oilers squad in a shootout. In that game, Detroit got goals from Viktor Arvidson (his fifth, on the power play), Emmitt Finnie (his fifth) and Dylan Larkin (his second) in regulation.
The teams played to a scoreless overtime, sending the game to a shootout. Lucas Raymond was the lone player to score in the shootout, giving the Red Wings the triumph. Michal Postlava made 24 saves for Detroit, who owned a 28-27 edge in terms of shots on goal, in the win. It marked his first career start.
Detroit stands 26th in goals per game by averaging 2.58 goals per contest in the early going. Detroit is tied for 9th in goals allowed by giving up an average of 2.92 goals per game this season. The Red Wings are 15th in the league with the man advantage as they convert 21.4% of their power play opportunities. Detroit is below average in the penalty killing department, ranking 30th as they successfully navigate 65.9% of their shorthanded situations.
Meanwhile, John Gibson (3-4-1, 3.44 GAA, .867 save percentage) is the expected starter between the pipes for Detroit. If he doesn’t go, Michal Postava (1-0-0, 2.89 GAA, .889 save percentage) would be in net for the Red Wings. That of course, is contingent on whether Daniil Tarasov (1-0-2, 1.40 GAA, .940 save percentage, SO) is healthy.
Blackhawks vs. Red Wings Prediction: Under 6.5 (-135)
We’re looking at a clash of a pair of teams that are offensively challenged when you get right down to brass tacks. The only team that Chicago is outscoring this season is the Philadelphia Flyers. They’ve scored three or more goals four times in 12 games this season. Meanwhile, that means they’ve been held to two goals or less eight times already.
Detroit isn’t setting the world on fire offensively either as they are 26th in the league in goals per game. However, they’ve been relatively sound in their own end of the ice. Granted, most of that heavy lifting is from Tarasov. Still, Postava held his own against an Oilers team with Connor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl in his first career start. Given both teams penchant to not do much offensively, roll with the under here.
More Blackhawks vs. Red Wings Picks, Props and Best Bets
- Alex DeBrincat, Red Wings Anytime Goalscorer: Hard Rock, +140 DeBrincat is off to a solid start for the Red Wings this season. He leads Detroit in goals (six) and assists (13) in the opening 12 games of the year. One thing you know with DeBrincat is he’s going to let it rip. He has 44 shots on goal to this point of the year. That’s an average of 3.67 per game. Meanwhile, he has 100 shot attempts! DeBrincat’s 13.6% shooting percentage is actually lower than his career mark of 14.2% so it’s not good fortune pacing him. As a result, I’m backing DeBrincat, who scored his 300th career goal last week, to light the lamp.
- Lucas Raymond, Red Wings Over 2.5 Shots: FanDuel, -144 Raymond is playing on the second line for the Red Wings on the right side along with Dylan Larkin and Michael Brandsegg-Nygård. He has three goals and eight assists for 11 points on the season. Raymond is a force when the Red Wings have the man advantage. Seven of his 11 points (two goals, five assists) have come on the power play.Meanwhile, Raymond has fired 37 shots on goal and recorded 87 shot attempts in the opening 12 games. He’s beaten this number in seven of the Red Wings’ 12 games this year. Back him to get it done again as Chicago gives up the sixth-most shots per game in the league.
- Patrick Kane, Blackhawks Over 0.5 Assists: Hard Rock, +125 Kane may be 38 and in the twilight of what is likely a Hall of Fame career. The fact remains that he is still capable of being a serviceable playmaker for a Blackhawks team long on youth and short on veteran leadership. Sure, Kane is a -12 and has just one goal in the opening 12 games of the season. However, he’s skating more than 19 minutes a night and he’s on the Blackhawks’ second line with Frank Nazar and Oliver Moore. Kane has seven assists in the first 12 games. When you factor in that Chicago has just 26 goals in 12 games, he’s been pretty active. He can pick up an apple here.
