Vita Vea Requests Trade From Buccaneers Ahead of Season

NFL training camps are heating up, and that means more storylines are emerging around the league.

Just a few days into camp, there have already been season-ending injuries, coaching injuries, free agent signings and now a blockbuster trade request. That makes the Tampa Bay Buccaneers one of the biggest storylines of training camp after star defensive tackle Vita Vea reportedly asked out.

Vea has been one of the cornerstones of Tampa Bay’s defense for many years now, making this a huge development for a team that still has playoff aspirations entering next season.

And just because a player requests a trade doesn’t mean it’ll ultimately be granted.

There has to be another team willing to give up the type of assets that would make the Buccaneers comfortable moving him, and Tampa Bay could also simply decide it has no interest in trading one of its best defensive players.

That’s what makes this situation so fascinating.

Vea is one of the premier interior defensive linemen in the NFL. He’s capable of completely controlling the line of scrimmage, occupying multiple blockers and making life easier for everyone else around him on defense.

Players with that type of impact aren’t easy to replace, especially this late in the offseason. That’s why the best-case scenario for Tampa Bay is probably finding a way to repair the relationship.

While Vea would undoubtedly command a significant return on the trade market, replacing a player of his caliber just weeks before the season begins would be incredibly difficult.

The Buccaneers still believe they have a roster capable of competing for the playoffs, and subtracting one of the anchors of their defense certainly doesn’t make that easier.

So now, one of the NFL’s best defensive tackles has officially requested a trade.

Whether Tampa Bay grants that request or finds a way to mend the relationship will be one of the biggest storylines to follow throughout the remainder of training camp.
