Stefon Diggs Signs One-Year Deal With Commanders
With the Hall of Fame Game taking place Thursday to kick off preseason action, it means we’re finally out of the dark and into the light. That’s right, football is back on the radar. Now, that’s not to be disrespectful to the UFL or the CFL but the NFL is the crown jewel of football.
With that said, there are still some big names on the free agent market looking for a new spot in 2026. That list shrunk by one on Wednesday as a receiver who put up solid numbers last year found a new home. Let’s take a look at what unfolded and what it means going forward.
Stefon Diggs Lands With Commanders
After spending last season with the Patriots and cut loose after one year, Stefon Diggs was a free agent. He went through some off the field issues that were resolved and several teams were rumored as being interested in procuring his services. That finally came to a close on Wednesday as Diggs agreed to a one-year contract potentially worth up to $12 million with Washington. The deal adds a proven veteran threat to Washington’s arsenal as the Commanders look to rebound from last season’s disappointing 5-12 campaign.

Diggs reeled in 85 passes for 1,013 yards and four scores for the Patriots in the regular season last year. In the postseason, Diggs added 14 grabs for 110 yards and a touchdown in the playoffs as the Patriots reached the Super Bowl. New England cut him loose rather than pay him. They then replaced him in the offense by trading for A.J. Brown from the Eagles. He has 942 catches for 11,504 yards and 74 scores in his career in the regular season.
For Diggs’ talent, he has a reputation of being a bit high maintenance. Washington marks his fifth stop in the NFL overall but his fourth in the last four seasons. After finishing his four-year tenure in Buffalo in 2023, he was traded to Houston that offseason. Diggs caught 47 passes for 496 yards and three scores before suffering a knee injury that cut his season short. Last season saw him in New England and now he’s in Washington, hoping to elevate Jaylen Daniels to his past glory. The Commanders hope he can do for Daniels what he did helping Josh Allen explode in 2020.

After seeing Deebo Samuel go back to San Francisco, the Commanders had an opening opposite Terry McLaurin at the receiver spot. With Daniels back under center (and hopefully healthy), Diggs provides a proven veteran presence that can contribute immediately. It also bumps more unproven commodities down the pecking order. Washington should improve offensively with him in the mix. One has to think that Diggs is on his best behavior with this being a one-year deal. With McLaurin on the other side and Chig Okonkwo at tight end, the Commanders have options to target in the passing game.
How does it all play out? That’s what we’ll see in the coming months. However, this deal does seem to put a damper on the expectations that Brandon Aiyuk might make his way to Washington. After all, there’s only one football to go around. With a pair of receivers that are used to getting the lion’s share of the targets, adding another to the mix makes for potential headaches that the Commanders can ill afford at this point in time.
