Stefon Diggs Finds New Home With Commanders on One-Year Deal

Stefon Diggs has officially found a new home after being a key piece in the New England Patriots making the Super Bowl last season.

The veteran wide receiver is officially joining the Washington Commanders on a one-year deal worth up to $12 million, which was announced earlier this week.

Diggs had been one of the biggest remaining free agents at this stage of the offseason. With the preseason starting this week, this is pretty late in the game for a player of his caliber to find a new team.

But his availability had less to do with his talent on the field and more to do with the financials of his previous contract. New England released Diggs in March with the veteran receiver carrying a $26.5 million cap hit.

Now, Washington gets a player who can still be a difference-maker.

And the Commanders are one of the more fascinating teams entering this season because there's such a wide range of potential outcomes.

There's a world where Jayden Daniels is an MVP candidate, the offense is humming, the defense matches that production and Washington emerges as the best team in the NFC East and makes the playoffs.

There's also a scenario where things don't click, the Commanders are the third-best team in their own division and finish around .500 or worse.

That's why Diggs makes so much sense.

On a one-year deal, this is a good gamble for Washington. He's no longer widely viewed as a true No. 1-caliber receiver, but if he's your No. 2 option, he's still one of the better players in the league in that role.

Diggs has been vocal about believing exactly that throughout his free agency process.

Now he gets the opportunity to prove it.

There's very little long-term risk for Washington, and if Diggs still has plenty left in the tank, he could become an important piece of an offense with significant upside.

At this point in the offseason, that's a really solid move by the Commanders.
