NC State’s coaching search has another familiar name in the mix. And this one comes with a Super Bowl ring. Former NFL quarterback Russell Wilson interviewed Tuesday for the Wolfpack’s head coaching position, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter.

That's a big-time name that could return to his old stomping grounds.

Wilson Could Return To Raleigh

Wilson played at NC State from 2008-10 before transferring to Wisconsin to finish his college career. Now, he’s exploring a return in a very different role.

His NFL resume certainly brings name recognition. Wilson played 14 seasons, appeared in more than 200 games, and threw for 46,966 yards and 353 touchdowns. He also earned 10 Pro Bowl selections.

Of course, playing quarterback and running a college program are different assignments. Wilson’s accomplishments would make him a high-profile hire, but they don’t automatically answer questions about recruiting, managing a staff, or building a roster. The same goes for Rivers.

Philip Rivers Also In The Mix

Philip Rivers has also engaged in talks about the position, per ESPN. Rivers gives the search another former Wolfpack star with a lengthy NFL resume.

The opening follows Dave Doeren’s dismissal Oct. 24 during his 14th season. He finished 98-74, leaving as the winningest coach in program history. Running backs coach and special teams coordinator Todd Goebbel is serving as interim coach.

NC State enters this week at 4-4, with its future leadership becoming a major storyline beyond the remaining schedule.

Whether the Wolfpack ultimately chooses Wilson, Rivers, or another candidate, this search already has plenty of attention. Bringing a former star quarterback home would certainly make a splash.
