Except for the Monday night game between the Washington Commanders and the San Francisco 49ers, week 6 of the NFL schedule is in the rear view mirror. It’s been a rough stretch for several teams. The Los Angeles Chargers fell to 0-6 and, along with the Miami Dolphins (0-5), are the lone winless teams left in the league.

Then there are the Philadelphia Eagles, who started the year 2-0 before injuries started wreaking havoc on the team. Their loss to the Carolina Panthers, 25-14, at home Sunday marked their fourth straight defeat and dropped them to 2-4 on the year. We talked about their issues in a previous piece, talking about the issues to the offensive line. Since that point, they traded Cam Jurgens to Baltimore, taking another veteran out of the mix.

In addition, the Eagles were down to their fourth-string running back in Dameon Pierce Sunday. He was less than effective. On Monday, the reeling Eagles were dealt what may be the death blow to their season. They currently stand at +460 odds to make the playoffs at FanDuel. Meanwhile, their odds to win the Super Bowl dropped to +15000. That's a marked drop from the +146 and +4000 odds they had, respectively, less than two weeks ago.

Jalen Hurts Done for the Season

Philadelphia had enough issues when it comes to putting points on the board this season. Things didn’t get any rosier for them on Monday. It was announced that starting quarterback Jalen Hurts is done for the season.

Hurts had been ruled out for the game against the Panthers late last week with a blood clot in his thigh. The team then placed him on injured reserve Saturday with the issue, which took him out of action for a minimum of four weeks.

On Monday, the Eagles announced that Hurts has blood clots in both his lungs as well as deep vein thrombosis. He will be on blood thinners for roughly three months and league rules state that a player cannot play while on blood thinners. Meanwhile, he finishes the season having completed 89 of 154 passes for 933 yards with eight touchdowns and three picks. He added 23 carries for 107 yards and a score.

What’s Next For the Eagles?

As it stands, Tanner McKee steps in as the starter at quarterback for the Eagles. He completed 26 of 45 passes for 215 yards and a touchdown in the loss to the Panthers. As it stands, he projects as the starting quarterback for the Eagles the rest of the season. In addition, rookie fifth-round pick Cole Payton and Joe Milton III, who was picked up off the Cowboys’ practice squad, are the other quarterbacks on the active roster.

Philadelphia still has capable options at the receiver and tight end positions. DeVonta Smith returned against Carolina after missing time with a hamstring injury. Hollywood Brown was healthy but inactive Sunday. Dontayvion Wicks and rookie Makai Lemon are there. Meanwhile, Philadelphia has Dallas Goedert and Zach Ertz at tight end. Saquon Barkley will return eventually to bolster the run game. The NFC East is far from imposing. The Giants lead the division at 3-2-1 while the Cowboys are 2-4 and the Commanders 1-3-1 entering Monday night.

The potential is there to turn things around but will it actually matter at this stage?
