The Carolina Panthers and Jacksonville Jaguars are two of the more interesting teams entering the upcoming NFL season because, truthfully, these rosters could go in quite a few different directions. There’s a world where either team takes a legitimate step forward and ends up being pretty good, but neither enters the year as a bona fide contender. There’s also a realistic chance that one or both ultimately miss the playoffs.

For now, though, the focus is on the preseason, where Carolina has already played two games compared to just one for Jacksonville. The Panthers have shown they can put points on the board, but they’ve also struggled to keep opponents from doing the same. That’s a big part of my Panthers vs. Jaguars prediction, as I’m expecting points in this matchup and giving Jacksonville the slight edge at home.

Panthers-Jaguars Betting Odds

The Panthers vs. Jaguars odds have Jacksonville as a small favorite in what’s expected to be a relatively competitive game.

There isn’t much separation between these teams from an odds perspective, which makes sense in the preseason. Rotations change throughout the game, starters can play limited snaps or not at all, and much of the outcome comes down to roster depth.

Still, Jacksonville only needs to win the moneyline and by two points to cover, and I like the Jaguars to do exactly that.

Game Prediction

The biggest trend with Carolina through two preseason games has been points. The Panthers opened the preseason with a 33-30 win over Arizona in the Hall of Fame Game before allowing 29 points in a loss to Buffalo last week.

That means Carolina is allowing 29.5 points per game through two preseason contests. Obviously, we’re dealing with small samples and completely different rotations from week to week, but it’s still worth noting when evaluating a game with a total sitting at only 37.5.

Jacksonville’s preseason opener followed a similar script. The Jaguars scored 24 points against New Orleans while allowing 20, giving us another team that has already been involved in a game that comfortably cleared this total.

My Panthers vs. Jaguars prediction is that we see another matchup where both offenses are able to generate enough scoring opportunities to keep things moving. Carolina has already shown that its offense has some weapons capable of producing points, even if things were a little more stagnant against Buffalo.

Jacksonville also showed enough offensively in its opener for me to trust the Jaguars in this spot. With the spread sitting at only 1.5 points on most betting sites, I’m comfortable asking them to win by at least a field goal.

Best Bet: Jaguars -1.5 (-110) via BetMGM

Panthers-Jaguars Total Prediction

The over is probably my favorite angle in this game.

Preseason football can be unpredictable because the players who actually get snaps vary so much from game to game. But through Carolina’s first two contests, we’ve seen totals of 63 and 43 points. Jacksonville’s opener against New Orleans produced another 44.

That doesn’t guarantee another high-scoring game, but it does show that 37.5 is a pretty attainable number for these teams.

Defensive lapses are also more common when backups are getting extended snaps. One missed assignment or busted coverage can create a chunk play, and turnovers can give offenses short fields. Both teams have shown enough scoring ability that I’m willing to bet those opportunities turn into points.

The second piece of my Panthers vs. Jaguars prediction is taking Over 37.5. I’m expecting Jacksonville to ultimately come out on top, but I think Carolina scores enough to help push this game past the total.

Best Bet: Over 37.5 (-112) via BetMGM

Final Panthers-Jaguars Best Bets

There’s plenty of uncertainty with both of these teams entering the season, and preseason football only adds another layer of unpredictability. But through the games we’ve seen so far, both have shown the ability to score while also giving opponents opportunities on the other side.

That has me backing Jacksonville -1.5 as the slight favorite and Over 37.5 in what I expect to be a high-scoring contest. The Jaguars get the edge at home, but Carolina should do enough offensively to help us get over the total.
