Lions vs. Panthers Prediction, Odds & Picks for Oct. 4: Gibbs Maintains Elite Role

The Carolina Panthers will host the Detroit Lions in a surprisingly important NFC Week 4 matchup. Our Lions vs. Panthers prediction outlines FanDuel odds, betting trends, injuries, and best bets for Sunday Night Football.
The Lions are 2-1 and sit second in the NFC North, but they enter this game with a -2 point differential. The Panthers are tied at the top of the NFC South, but they’re only 1-2 thus far. They do own a +6 point differential, though.
Both teams are trying to keep pace in their respective division races. The Lions are looking to move to 3-1, while the Panthers are looking to get back even at 2-2.

The Lions haven’t performed as well as anyone was hoping early in 2026. They beat the New Orleans Saints in OT before losing on the road to the Buffalo Bills. They also won a one-score game against the New York Jets. Here are some trends for Detroit this week:
- The Lions are 2-1 straight up and 0-2-1 ATS this season.
- The Over is 3-0 in Detroit games.
- Detroit leads the NFL with 3.7 red-zone touchdowns per game.
- Brian Branch, Kerby Joseph, Thomas Harper, and Avonte Maddox are still out of their secondary.
The Lions continue to feature a high-end offense, scoring 31 points in each of their three games. They struggle defensively, allowing 31.7 points per game through three weeks.
The biggest issue for Detroit’s defense is injuries in the secondary, particularly at safety. Branch and Joseph are game-changing players in the secondary, while Harper and Maddox add depth. D.J. Reed is also questionable for this game after being limited throughout the week.

Carolina Panthers Betting Trends
The Panthers have looked like two different teams over the past three weeks. They followed up a 22-point loss to the Chicago Bears in Week 1 with a 31-point win against the Atlanta Falcons in Week 2. They fell to the Cleveland Browns in Week 3, to fall to 1-2. Here are some trends for Week 4:
- The Panthers are 1-2 straight up and 1-2 ATS this season.
- The Over is 1-2 in Carolina games.
- Carolina ranks eighth in points per play (0.454).
- Xavier Legette has been ruled out, while Jalen Coker is questionable.
The Panthers were already relatively thin at wide receiver, and it showed when Coker got hurt last week. If he’s out again, there isn’t much talent behind Tetairoa McMillan. The lack of overall depth could be an issue, but it’ll be a moot point if Coker plays.
Carolina scored 71 points across its first two games before struggling against the Browns. Health is a big factor, and this could be the perfect spot for them to get back on track.

Lions vs. Panthers Prediction: Over 50.5 (-118)
It’s a high total, but the Over is my favorite Lions vs. Panthers prediction.
These are two teams that have been significantly better on offense than on defense. The Lions rank sixth in the NFL in points per play (0.467), while the Panthers rank eighth (0.454). Together, they average 60.7 points per game.
They’ve been nearly as bad defensively in 2026. Carolina ranks 23rd in points allowed per play (0.415), and Detroit ranks 26th (0.440). Together, their defenses have allowed 59.4 points per game this season.
Arguably, the biggest key in this game is the pace. Both teams rank in the top 10 in seconds per play, meaning this game should offer plenty of opportunities for the offenses to succeed.
Best Bet: Lions/Panthers Over 50.5 Points (-118 @ FanDuel Sportsbook)
More Lions vs. Panthers Picks, Props and Best Bets
Here are a few more Lions vs. Panthers betting angles to consider:
- Jahmyr Gibbs Over 135.5 Rushing & Receiving Yards: (-114 @ FanDuel Sportsbook) - Gibbs boasts an elite role in the Detroit offense. Carolina is giving up a league-high 5.7 yards per carry this season. I’m combining rushing and receiving because Gibbs is elite in both.
- Jahmyr Gibbs Anytime Touchdown: (-360 @ FanDuel Sportsbook) - Gibbs has seen a league-high 18 red-zone carries, including 5 inside the five-yard line. Carolina has given up two red-zone touchdowns per game so far. This is a parlay piece.
- Tetairoa McMillan Over 70.5 Receiving Yards: (-114 @ FanDuel Sportsbook) - McMillan’s a focal point of this offense, and he’s seen 295 air yards thus far. I already discussed Detroit’s injury-depleted secondary, and McMillan is the best way to take advantage of that.
