The Philadelphia Eagles open the 2026 NFL season at home against the Washington Commanders in an NFC East matchup that should immediately show where both teams stand. Week 1 always brings some uncertainty after an entire offseason of roster changes and new schemes, but on paper there is a pretty significant talent gap between these two teams, especially in terms of playoff upside.

Washington still has interesting pieces, most notably Jayden Daniels at quarterback, but there are legitimate questions throughout the roster. Philadelphia enters the season expecting to contend for the NFC again, and even without A.J. Brown, there is enough talent on both sides of the ball for the Eagles to control this game.

My Eagles vs. Commanders Prediction has Philadelphia winning comfortably and starting the season with a statement at home.

Eagles-Commanders Betting Odds

Philadelphia enters Week 1 as a clear favorite against its division rival.

The spread is where I am most interested. Philadelphia only needs to win by a touchdown to cover, and I think there is a real chance the margin ends up being much larger than that.

Washington finished last season 5-12 and enters 2026 with plenty of questions. Daniels gives the Commanders upside at quarterback, but the roster around him still lacks the depth and overall talent Philadelphia has. Washington has also dealt with issues along the offensive line, which is not ideal when opening the season against what should once again be one of the better defensive fronts in football.

Game Prediction

I have the Eagles winning this game by roughly two touchdowns.

The biggest mismatch could come when Washington has the football. Philadelphia should have one of the NFL's better defenses again, and the Commanders are going to have to find a way to keep Daniels comfortable against a defensive front that can generate pressure without needing to constantly blitz.

Daniels is talented enough to create plays when things break down, but asking him to carry an offense against this defense in Week 1 is a difficult assignment. Washington has some interesting skill-position talent, but this still does not feel like a receiving corps or overall offensive group that can consistently stress Philadelphia for four quarters.

On the other side, the Eagles have several ways to generate offense even after losing Brown during the offseason. Barkley remains one of the best running backs in football, and Philadelphia should continue to feature him heavily. Washington struggled badly against the run last season, which makes this an excellent matchup for the Eagles to establish Barkley early and let the rest of the offense work from there.

My Eagles vs. Commanders Prediction ultimately comes down to Philadelphia having the better quarterback situation, better offensive line, better defense and better overall roster. Washington may keep things competitive early because division games tend to have some weirdness, especially in Week 1, but I expect the Eagles to pull away as the game progresses.

The moneyline is obviously the safer option, but -250 does not provide much value. If Philadelphia wins the way I expect, the 5.5-point spread via DraftKings is the better bet.

Best Bet: Eagles -5.5

Eagles-Commanders Total Prediction

I also like the over 44.5, although most of that confidence in the odds comes from Philadelphia's ability to score.

The Eagles do not necessarily need Washington to have a great offensive afternoon for this number to cash. If Philadelphia gets into the high 20s or low 30s, the Commanders only need to contribute somewhere in the upper teens for the game to clear 44.5.

That feels realistic.

Philadelphia should be able to run the football effectively, and that can open up easier opportunities for Hurts and the passing game. The absence of Brown changes the receiving hierarchy, but Smith remains a legitimate No. 1 option, and the Eagles have enough complementary pieces to move the football against a Washington defense that has plenty to prove.

The Commanders should also have a few opportunities to score. Daniels is too dynamic to expect Philadelphia to completely shut him down, and his ability to extend plays can create offense even when the structure of a possession breaks down.

I still think the Eagles defense controls most of this game, but something in the range of 31-17 or 31-20 would comfortably get us over the total while also giving Philadelphia the convincing win I am expecting.

Best Bet: Over 44.5

Final Eagles-Commanders Picks

Week 1 can produce strange results because nobody has regular-season film on the newest versions of these teams yet. New schemes are being unveiled, offseason additions are seeing meaningful snaps for the first time, and both sides have had months to prepare.

Even with that uncertainty, this feels like one of the more straightforward mismatches on the Week 1 slate. Philadelphia has the stronger roster, the better defense and more proven offensive firepower.

I am backing Eagles -5.5 as the primary play, with Philadelphia -250 on the moneyline offering a safer alternative for anyone who does not want to lay the points. Over 44.5 rounds out the card, with the expectation that the Eagles do most of the heavy lifting offensively and win this game by double digits.
