The Kansas City Chiefs have been one of the most consistently successful teams in the NFL over the past decade.

But the upcoming campaign carried plenty of uncertainty after Patrick Mahomes suffered a torn ACL last season in mid-December. Given the timing of that injury, there was never any guarantee he would be ready for Week 1. In fact, for many players, an injury that late in the year can delay a return until the middle, or even the latter portion, of the following season.

But ahead of the weekend, the Chiefs received the news they were hoping for.

Mahomes has officially been cleared to participate in training camp without restrictions and said he feels “amazing” entering the 2026 season. Not only is he one of the greatest to ever play the sport, but he's one of those unique athletes who is seemingly able to recover quickly. He's also played through injuries throughout his career, still at a high level. While he shouldn't rush back a return with this type of injury, its still fascinating.

Mahomes' return is a huge development for Kansas City.

Instead of wondering who the backup quarterback will be or how many games Mahomes could potentially miss, the conversation has now shifted back toward the Chiefs being one of the premier teams in the NFL and firmly back in the Super Bowl discussion.

With a dynamic running back alongside Mahomes in the backfield, with recent Super Bowl champion Kenneth Walker III entering the fold in Kansas City, this team will have an entirely new look on offense. He could end up being the best running back the Chiefs have had in quite some time.

Now, returning to practice at this point doesn’t necessarily guarantee Mahomes will be on the field in Week 1. The Chiefs will still be smart with his workload and continue monitoring his recovery throughout training camp.

But this is undeniably a major step in the right direction.

Kansas City has continued reshaping its roster throughout the offseason, adding talent on both sides of the football, and Mahomes has proven time and time again that when he’s healthy, it almost doesn’t matter who’s around him. The Chiefs are going to be contenders.

Perhaps the biggest benefit of returning now is that Mahomes gets an entire training camp to work with his teammates instead of trying to build chemistry after the season has already started. He gets to spend time on the field working on timing and physically run through actions with the teammates he will compete with all season.

Those practice reps matter.

The timing, communication and familiarity that are developed throughout camp often pay dividends once meaningful games begin, especially with new faces joining the offense. Especially in a loaded division, the Chiefs can't afford a slow start, because teams like the Denver Broncos and Los Angeles Chargers have the talent to maintain an elite record all season, which would make a poor start to the season potentially detrimental for KC.

For Mahomes, this isn’t just about getting healthy enough to play. It’s about having enough time to get back into football shape, regain his rhythm and build momentum heading into the regular season.

And now that he’s back on the practice field, Chiefs fans have every reason to believe another championship run is firmly within reach. It won't be an easy road, but when their QB1 is on the field, anything can happen.
