NFL Preseason: Drew Allar Impresses, Raiders Lift

Drew Allar electrifies for Steelers

Steelers rookie, Drew Allar, delivered arguably the preseason's biggest individual performance, accounting for three touchdowns in Pittsburgh's 28-9 victory over Green Bay.

Allar threw two touchdown passes and added a rushing score, displaying impressive accuracy and playmaking ability. Ultimately, our pregame tip on the Steelers was fully justified.

Pittsburgh's depth at quarterback suddenly looks like a strength, although the team committed 11 penalties for 143 yards, a glaring weakness that could become costly against starters.

With Aaron Rodgers expected to handle the regular-season job, Allar's debut nevertheless gives Pittsburgh exciting insurance and a potential long-term answer.

Fernando Mendoza gives Raiders plenty to like

Las Vegas rookie quarterback Fernando Mendoza made an immediate impression Thursday, justifying his draft pick. He completed 10 of 16 passes for 97 yards and a touchdown in a 27-14 loss to Arizona.

The #1 overall pick showed poise and accuracy, while veteran Kirk Cousins also opened with a touchdown drive, keeping the Raiders' quarterback competition intriguing.

Las Vegas' offensive potential looks improved, but finishing drives remains a concern. Mendoza's ability to stretch defenses could eventually give the Raiders a higher ceiling.

Cam Ward's debut offers Tennessee a reality check

Tennessee won 19-13 at San Francisco. However, rookie quarterback Cam Ward's first preseason outing was uneven.

Ward helped engineer an impressive 95-yard opening touchdown drive, yet struggled afterward, finishing 5-of-12 for 57 yards.

The Titans' running game provided encouragement, with Tony Pollard scoring and Tyjae Spears breaking off a 25-yard run.

Tennessee also benefited from four Joey Slye field goals. The biggest concern is consistency through the air, while the defense showed vulnerabilities in coverage that must be cleaned up.

Texans find a bright spot despite ugly loss

Houston's 27-7 preseason defeat to the Chargers exposed offensive problems for the Texan team. However, rookie tight end Marlin Klein provided a reason for optimism, with a 31-yard reception and multiple contributions throughout.

Houston’s defense is certainly their big strength. However, they’ll be looking for more consistency around C.J. Stroud as the preseason grinds on.

Klein, meanwhile, is versatile and DeMeco Ryans will be looking for more balance from his side.
