Giants Sign Jameis Winston to Two-Year, $13 Million Extension

The New York Giants have their franchise quarterback in Jaxson Dart, but with a young quarterback, a veteran presence and injury insurance are very important in the NFL.

And as such, New York has agreed to a two-year, $13 million extension with Jameis Winston, keeping the 32-year-old quarterback under contract through the 2028 season. Winston is already signed for just over $4 million this season, so this adds an additional two years to his existing deal.

And this just goes to show the importance of having a veteran presence in the room who is also still good enough to keep the Giants afloat if Dart isn't available for a short period of time. That's why even a backup quarterback signing a deal is legitimate news.

Jameis Winston Gives Giants Legitimate Insurance

Winston is firmly the backup quarterback for the Giants into the short-term future.

It's important to note that Dart did miss two games last season with a concussion, which resulted in Winston making two starts and appearing in three games overall. In those appearances, Winston threw for 567 yards, two touchdowns and a pair of interceptions.

But with 12 years of NFL experience under his belt and 89 career starts, this is a legitimate backup option. Winston is one of the more experienced backups in the entire league, and the Giants clearly value what he can provide if Dart has to miss time.

Winston’s Role Goes Beyond the Field

And again, Winston is an important veteran piece for Dart and for the Giants locker room. He arrived in New York last season and quickly became one of the more respected veteran voices on the roster.

Despite being the former No. 1 overall pick, Winston has embraced the backup role at this stage of his career. He's thrown for nearly 25,000 yards in the NFL and has continued to pursue opportunities to make a positive imprint on a promising young quarterback.

Instead of trying to go compete for another starting job next offseason, Winston is committing to his role behind Dart through 2028. And that's important for both him and the Giants as they continue building around their young franchise quarterback.
