Browns Sign Denzel Ward to $62.2 Million Extension Through 2030

There’s been no shortage of lucrative contracts handed out as NFL training camps get underway, and the latest belongs to Cleveland Browns star cornerback Denzel Ward. That's been one of the biggest storylines in camp this week.

Among everything that’s gone on in Cleveland over the past decade, with the uncertainty, the roster turnover and the constant questions about the future of the franchise, one of the few constants has been Ward. He’s developed into one of the premier cornerbacks in the entire NFL, and on Tuesday the Browns made sure one of the best players on their roster isn’t going anywhere.

Cleveland agreed to a two-year, $62.2 million contract extension with the four-time Pro Bowler, keeping him under contract through the 2030 season. The deal includes $52.3 million guaranteed and makes him the highest-paid DB in NFL history for the second time in his career.

Quite frankly, this always felt like a move that was going to happen.

Since being selected with the fourth overall pick in the 2018 NFL Draft, Ward has consistently taken on the opposing team’s top wide receiver every single week. That’s exactly why he’s earned this new deal, which makes him the highest-paid cornerback in the NFL.

These are the types of players defenses are quite literally built around.

Especially in today’s NFL, elite cornerbacks have become almost as valuable as elite pass rushers. Teams throw the ball more than ever before, and the amount of talent at wide receiver across the league continues to grow every year. If you have a defensive back capable of eliminating one side of the field, it changes the way your entire defense can operate.

There’s a premium on elite secondary talent, and that’s exactly why this contract is so lucrative.

Instead of waiting another year and watching the cornerback market continue to climb, Cleveland made the smart decision to get ahead of those future increases while rewarding one of the faces of the franchise.

And especially after trading away Myles Garrett earlier this offseason, Ward has unquestionably become the cornerstone of Cleveland’s defense.

He’s still in the prime of his career, still one of the best cornerbacks in football and still the type of player every NFL team is searching for.

Not only is Ward a tremendous cover corner who consistently makes plays, but he’s also a physical tackler who excels in every aspect of the position. He’s one of the vocal leaders on this team and has become a staple of consistency for the Browns. Quite frankly, quarterbacks avoid throwing his direction a lot of the time, which is part of the reason his interception totals don’t always jump off the page.

But his impact goes far beyond takeaways. He’s also been remarkably reliable throughout his career.

The fewest games he’s played in a season is 12, and he appeared in 15 games last year, so he’s consistently on the field playing meaningful snaps. And that kind of availability matters just as much as the per-game statistics. For a team to be consistently good, its best players have to consistently be on the field, and Ward has done exactly that throughout his career.

As the Browns continue trying to become a consistently competitive team in the AFC, keeping players like Denzel Ward in the building is exactly the type of move successful organizations have to make. He’s a foundational player, and now Cleveland has ensured he’ll remain one for years to come.

Despite this being a hefty price tag, it's a no-brainer move for the Browns.
