Bears Lock Up Darnell Wright With Four-Year, $116 Million Extension

The Chicago Bears continue to invest in franchise quarterback Caleb Williams by ensuring he has a quality offensive line in front of him.

That trend continued on Tuesday when the Bears agreed to a four-year, $116 million contract extension with right tackle Darnell Wright, keeping one of the organization's most important players in Chicago for the foreseeable future.

And for a team like the Bears that's competitive now but also built around a young core, having productive offensive linemen under contract long term is one of the biggest keys to sustaining success.

Since being selected with the No. 10 overall pick in the 2023 NFL Draft, Wright has developed into one of the best young offensive tackles in football. And especially with the way injuries have become so common around the league, protecting the quarterback has become the No. 1 priority for every NFL franchise.

Instead of allowing the market to continue climbing with every blockbuster contract that's signed, the Bears got ahead of it.

Rather than risking Wright eventually reaching free agency, Chicago locked up one of its homegrown stars before the price became even steeper.

That's smart business.

For the Bears, Wright has become exactly the type of player they envisioned when they drafted him. Not only has he performed at a high level, but he's been durable, dependable and has continued to improve each season. He's still young enough that there's reason to believe his best football is still ahead of him.

Those are exactly the kinds of players organizations hope to build around.

This extension also sends an important message to Caleb Williams.

Whether it's directly or indirectly, it shows the organization is committed to putting the right pieces around its franchise quarterback and doing everything it can to help him succeed over the long term.

It's still too early to know whether Chicago can take another leap this season and become a true Super Bowl contender.

But there's no question the Bears are one of the brightest young teams in the NFL, and keeping Darnell Wright in Chicago is another example of the front office making the right long-term decision.
