Allen, Bills Tame Lions on Thursday Night Football

Thursday Night Football in week 2 of the NFL brought us a completely different contest than we saw in the opening week of the season. The Buffalo Bills, opening their new stadium, were relentless offensively as they bolted to a 21-0 lead en route to a 41-31 win over the Detroit Lions. With the victory, the Bills improved to 2-0 on the year. Meanwhile, the Lions dropped to 1-1 on the campaign.

In a battle of offensive fireworks, there were plenty of big performances but in the end, it was Josh Allen doing the heavy lifting. He put up big numbers across the board to lead Buffalo to the victory.

Allen Piles Up Touchdowns

Allen had two passing touchdowns and a pair of rushing scores in the win over Houston in the opener last week. Meanwhile, the Lions surrendered 410 yards through the air to Tyler Shough and the Saints in their opener. That set the stage for what turned out to be a long night for the Detroit defense.

Allen was a force right out of the gate. He picked up 40 yards on the ground on the opening drive, capped by a one-yard scoring run. That gave the Bills a 7-0 advantage less than six minutes into the game. After the Buffalo defense forced a three-and-out, the offense was on the move again. Allen hit Joshua Palmer on a 43-yard touchdown pass off a blown coverage to make it a 14-0 contest.

After the opening quarter, Buffalo owned a 169-10 advantage in total offense. Allen added a one-yard strike to Dawson Knox early in the second quarter. Later, he hit Dalton Kincaid with a 16-yard scoring pass before finishing his tour de force with a two-yard run off a rollout late in the third quarter.

Adding to the Record Book

Allen had his NFL record 10th career game with at least two passing scores and two rushing scores. Next in line for that particular mark is Steve Young, who has four. In addition, Allen has three consecutive seasons with multiple games with at least two passing scores and two rushing scores. Prior to that, the feat had been accomplished three times in league history.

In addition, Allen moved up to 41st on the all-time passing TD list with 225, passing Ryan Fitzpatrick. His two rushing scores bumped his career total to 83. That number puts him tied for 18th in league history with Hall of Famer Jim Taylor. He now has 310 total touchdowns (225 passing, 83 rushing, two receiving) in the regular season. That further extends his record for most touchdowns by a quarterback in his first nine years.

Peyton Manning currently owns the league record for the most touchdowns by a quarterback in their first 10 seasons at 322. With the way Allen is going, he should shatter that mark later this season.
