49ers Reunite With Deebo Samuel as Receiver Concerns Continue to Grow

The San Francisco 49ers have dealt with no shortage of bad luck at wide receiver over the past year, and this offseason has only added to the uncertainty.

The Brandon Aiyuk situation has been an ongoing storyline of its own, while more recently, Ricky Pearsall has encountered additional setbacks as he continues recovering from a knee injury. Although rookie De'Zhaun Stribling is viewed as a promising addition, asking a first-year receiver to immediately become the focal point of a passing attack is a significant challenge, especially for a team with Super Bowl aspirations.

To help address those concerns, the 49ers turned to a familiar face, and made one of the biggest headlines of the early part of training camp.

San Francisco officially reunited with veteran wide receiver Deebo Samuel on Thursday, signing the former All-Pro to a one-year contract worth up to $7 million. Samuel originally entered the NFL as a second-round pick by the 49ers in 2019 and developed into one of the league’s most versatile offensive weapons before spending last season with the Washington Commanders.

The timing of the reunion makes plenty of sense. With training camp already underway, bringing in a player who already knows Kyle Shanahan’s offense dramatically shortens the learning curve. Samuel is already familiar with the coaching staff, terminology and offensive concepts, allowing him to step into the offense much more quickly than an outside free agent would at this stage of the offseason.

While there are other receivers out there who in theory may be better at this stage of their career, familiarity and proven success within a system is hard to beat. This is about as sure as a team could ever be about bringing in a veteran WR this late in the offseason.

While Samuel may no longer be at the peak of his career, he still offers a unique skill set that fits perfectly in Shanahan’s scheme. He can line up as a traditional wide receiver, catch passes out of the backfield, take handoffs as a pseudo running back and create explosive plays with the ball in his hands. Few players have been utilized as creatively in this offense over the years. It's unclear exactly how he will be used this time around with the 49ers, but there's no question he will be leveraged in creative ways.

Reports indicated Washington had interest in bringing Samuel back, but the opportunity to return to San Francisco ultimately won out. That has ramifications for the Commanders as well, as they look to solve their WR void he is leaving.

For the 49ers, it represents a low-risk move with considerable upside. Not only was it a team-friendly deal, but it works out no matter the health of the rest of the WR room.

If Pearsall is able to return healthy and contribute consistently, Samuel simply gives Brock Purdy another proven weapon in an already talented offense. If Pearsall’s recovery continues to linger or injuries strike elsewhere, however, Samuel quickly becomes much more than a luxury, he becomes a necessity.

Given the current state of San Francisco’s wide receiver room, the move was an easy one to justify. Samuel remains a fan favorite, knows exactly what’s expected within the organization and has already proven he can thrive in this system. At this point in the offseason, there may not have been a more logical or seamless addition available for a 49ers team determined to get back into Super Bowl contention.
