NFL Week 9 betting lines

Among Week 8 odds, favorites combined to finish 7-4-3 against the spread. However, one of the biggest upsets of the year came via the defending Super Bowl champs, as the Broncos knocked off the Chiefs as touchdown underdogs and roughly +270 on the moneyline.

Since we’re almost onto Week 9 odds, let’s break down four matchups and compare the point spreads to the look-ahead line. If you’re unfamiliar with the second of those terms, it gives bettors a peek at projected point spreads for the following week’s games.

Limits on look-ahead spreads are slimmer than a “normal” week, but that shouldn’t be the purpose of how gamblers perceive them. Given bettors normally have initial recency bias, look-ahead lines offer a clear, impartial snapshot of teams, according to the oddsmakers.

Here are several point spreads to keep an eye on.

Kansas City Chiefs (-2.5) vs. Miami Dolphins (+2.5)

We’ve already seen a significant adjustment on the spread, as the look-ahead line favored the Chiefs by four points for this showdown in Germany. As noted above, it’s below the key number of a field goal. That’s a byproduct of Mahomes’ aforementioned struggles against the Broncos. The Chiefs delivered a mere 4.8 yards per play with five turnovers, as Mahomes played through flu-like symptoms.

Assuming the two-time NFL MVP is healthy on Sunday, he should rebound against Miami’s scuffling secondary. Then again, the return of cornerback Jalen Ramsey has shored things up a bit.

Tampa Bay Buccaneers (+3) at Houston Texans (-3)

The Buccaneers and the Texans have been frisky early in the 2023 NFL season but they both fell last week. Houston was a -2.5 favorite last week and the spread has settled around HOU -3 at most sportsbooks this week.

Arizona Cardinals (+7.5) at Cleveland Browns (-7.5)

Bettors of both teams were on the opposite ends of the stick in Week 8. First, the Browns blew a field-goal lead in the waning minutes in Seattle. Moments later, Joshua Dobbs & Co. underwent plenty of positive outcomes to notch a backdoor cover against the Ravens.

Regarding this matchup, Dobbs might make his final start of the 2023 campaign — ahead of Kyler Murray’s return. Interestingly enough, Cardinals offensive coordinator Drew Petzing will square off against his former team, as he was on the Browns’ staff from 2020-22. Unless Arizona is efficient on the ground against the Browns’ top-10 run defense, Cleveland should bounce back in a big way.

For context, the look-ahead line was Cleveland -8.5. Therefore, it’s still above the key number of a touchdown.

Minnesota Vikings (+4) at Atlanta Falcons (-4)

Kirk Cousins’ torn ACL overshadowed Minnesota’s victory over Green Bay, as the veteran quarterback will miss the remainder of the season. That triggered a 3.5-point alteration with the look-ahead line. Rookie Jaren Hall, who hasn’t seen any action in 2023, could wind up under center. Be sure to monitor this situation before placing a wager.

Buffalo Bills (+1.5) at Cincinnati Bengals (-1.5)

In a rematch of the 2022 AFC Divisional Round, this spread was initially lined at Buffalo -1.5. But the betting market has shifted after Joe Burrow’s dominant performance against the 49ers, posting an elite-level 0.47 EPA per dropback. He’ll take on the Bills’ banged-up defense on Sunday Night Football.
