nfl week 9 look-ahead lines

We near the halfway point of the season with NFL Week 9 look-ahead lines. One of the surprising teams headlines and hosts a potential first place showdown when the Cleveland Browns travel in-state to tackle the Cincinnati Bengals in a key AFC North clash. The Bengals were pegged for last place in the division prior to the season, but Cincinnati has risen up, including in Week 7 with a resounding 41-17 road win against Baltimore to move into a first place tie with the Ravens.

Cincinnait is a 2.5-point favorite on the FanDuel Sportsbook look-ahead line, and you’ll want to check TheLines weekly injury report as the underdog Browns have QB Baker Mayfield nursing a shoulder injury ahead of Week 8 action after missing the Week 7 win over the Denver Broncos.

Weekly point spread bettors can also check out DraftKings Sportsbook advance lines, which show the Bengals a 3-point favorite over the Browns on the key number, and an over/under of 45.5 points.

Thursday Night Football Odds

The Jets and Colts may not draw as much interest to many NFL fans, but the New York sports betting market will have more interest with New York a 14-point underdog on the Week 9 look-ahead line. The odds at the online sportsbooks are adjusting much more with the Jets failures and injured QB Zach Wilson sidelined for at least two weeks with a sprained PCL. The Jets sport a 1-5 record and will be a double-digit underdog in three consecutive games including two at home. New York’s season win total has dipped to an AFC-low 3.5 with the Houston Texans. The Jets are averaging an NFL-low 13.3 points per game while the Colts are scoring a league-average 24.1 points per game as they host a key AFC South match-up in Week 8 against the Tennessee Titans.

Sunday Night Football Odds

The marquee matchups have produced some high-scoring thrillers with four of the seven SNF games producing at least 58 points. Another is expected in Week 9 as the Tennessee Titans travel to face the Los Angeles Rams in an inter-conference clash. Los Angeles is No. 3 in TheLines current power rankings, and the Rams (29.8) and Titans (27.6) are both top six in scoring this season. But LA’s offensive efficiency at 6.5 yards per play is second-best in the NFL while the Titans (5.6) are slightly below league average. Another higher-scoring game is expected with an over/under of 53 points, and prop bets will be popular supporting many players to go over their projected yards and totals.

Monday Night Football Odds

The Monday Night Football match-up is the Chicago Bears at Pittsburgh Steelers (-4.5). Two teams failing to meet expectations so far in 2021, and the offensive struggles are evident with a projected over/under of 40.5 points. Bears RB David Montgomery should return from the IR, but LB Khalil Mack (foot) is out for Week 8 and could eventually be placed on injured reserve (IR). A QB rating of 61.8 shows Bears QB Justin Fields ranks last in the NFL following a disastrous game with three INTs and four sacks in a 38-3 loss at Tampa Bay last week. The Bears (3-4) have averaged an NFC-low 14.4 points per game and 4.4 yards per play. But the Steelers offense and scoring is averaging only 19.5 points per game and 5.1 yards per play in their 3-3 start to the season. Both teams’ defenses were expected to be strengths, but the Steelers (352 yards/5.6 yards per play) and Bears (342/5.5) are near league average.

Week 9 Teams on a Bye

  • Detroit Lions
  • Seattle Seahawks
  • Tampa Bay Buccaneers
  • Washington Football Team

Last week we saw results that caused significant impact on the look-ahead lines and betting market. The Jets were destroyed by the Patriots, and the Bengals rousing road win over the Ravens combined with Jets QB Zach Wilson’s injury moved the Bengals/Jets lookahead-line of Bengals -4 to -8.5 on Monday and now up to -10.5 on the road.

Packers at Chiefs

The Packers (6-1) are without leading WR Devante Adams and WR Allen Lazard (both COVID -19 list) in their Week 8 road game at Arizona (7-0).  If reigning regular season MVP Aaron Rodgers can lead the upset over MVP favorite Kyler Murray and the Cardinals, then Green Bay will be closer to pick ’em next week at Kansas City than the current  point spread favoring the Chiefs.

The Kansas City deficient defense has been a disaster allowing 404 yards per game and league-worst 6.6 yards per play. In three home games against stronger teams and quarterbacks of the Browns, Chargers and Bills, the Chiefs have gone 1-2 and allowed 29, 30 and 38 points leading into their Week 8 Monday Night Football Game against the New York Giants.

Imagine an upset by the Giants will have a significant impact on the lookahead-line as well. Regardless, a Packers/Chiefs shootout is expected with a projected total of 54 points. Green Bay has played four straight games under a total of 50 or less heading into their clash with the Cardinals, but don’t anticipate the Chiefs/Packers total dropping unless there are more key injuries.

Browns at Bengals

Among NFL Week 9 look-ahead lines, Bengals -2.5 on FanDuel Sportsbook likely moves to -3, and definitely if the Browns lose as a -3.5 point favorite at home to the Steelers in Week 8. Interesting to note that the DraftKings Sportsbook opening line and advance point spread on this game prior to the 2021 season was Browns -4.5. The Browns are 4-3 heading into their Week 8 home game against division rival Pittsburgh Steelers.

Cleveland is -175 to make the playoffs and +320 to win the AFC North as the third choice at BetMGM. The Browns Super Bowl odds have drifted to +2500 after starting the season at +1600. The surging Bengals are 5-2 ahead of Week 8 action, and Cincinnati is +250 to win the division and -200 to make the playoffs.

The Bengals are currently +3000 to win the Super Bowl after starting the season as one of the biggest longshots on the board. The Bengals have also had one of the biggest season win totals adjustments to 9.5 (over -150) after starting the season at 6.5.
