NFL Week 8 implied team totals

Each week during the NFL season, TheLines will compile a list of implied team totals. In other words, NFL Week 8 implied team totals are how many points each team is expected to score this week, based on simple math with the spread and over/under.

Readers can make use of these team totals in a variety of ways for NFL Week 8 and beyond. Those ways include handicapping props, making fantasy decisions, etc.

All lines come from FanDuel Sportsbook as of Oct. 26, rounded to the nearest whole number.

Buffalo Bills

Back in Week 2, the Bills seemingly dominated the Dolphins 35-0.

However, all may not have been as rosy as the final score looked as far as the Buffalo offense went. They actually only gained 4.9 yards per play. Miami turnovers handed them several short fields, of which Josh Allen and Co. took advantage.

While metrics only believe this is an above average offense, not elite like last year’s unit, the Miami defense has performed way below expectations. They rank in the bottom quarter of the league in both EPA/play and DVOA. A pretty moribund Falcons offense just dropped 30 on them.

Plus, the Bills had the bye week to try to iron out whatever issues have held the offense back.

Kansas City Chiefs

In the first couple of weeks, the Chiefs offense looked like their usual selves. Only fumbling issues against the Ravens prevented them from being 2-0 as they stomped all over two respected defenses.

Ever since, the most feared offense in the league the past few years has quietly slipped into mediocrity. They rank just 12th in offense EPA/play in that span. Narrow to dropbacks and they rank a shocking 14th. That should simply never be the case with a quarterback as good as Patrick Mahomes.

The nadir came with a pitiful three-point performance in Tennessee this past weekend.

The market still expects big things according to the implied total, but it’s not hard to build a case for firing under even against an average Giants defense.

FanDuel has yet to post a team total line as they likely want certainty over the status of Mahomes, who got banged up in a scary play on Sunday.

Arizona Cardinals

One of the games of the week sees the Packers travel to Arizona on Thursday. Green Bay has faced an incredibly easy slate of opposing offenses. One can easily tell by noting the difference in their EPA ranking (15th) and DVOA (24th) as the latter takes schedule into account.

If the loss of CB Jaire Alexander has merely been masked by these opponents, we may find out against by far the toughest offense they’ve faced.

Miami Dolphins

Over the past two weeks, getting QB Tua Tagovailoa back from injury has appeared to boost the Dolphins offense slightly. On the season, the team is among the worst offenses in terms of EPA/play but they’re actually ranked 14th since Tagovailoa returned.

Only thing is, that came against two poor pass defenses in the Falcons and Jaguars. And Tagovailoa remained unable to kick the turnover bug, firing three INTs in that time.

Now, they get a Bills team coming off a bye and looking to bounce back from a tough loss. One leading the league in defense DVOA and EPA.

New York Jets

The Jets already had one of the league’s poorest offenses entering Week 7. Then, they went ahead and lost rookie QB Zach Wilson to a medium-term injury. The team looks to be deciding between ultra-anonymous fourth-year player Mike White, who just fired the first 32 attempts of his career, and Joe Flacco, for whom they just traded, as the temporary starter.

The Bengals would have once represented a soft first assignment for either man. Instead, they’ve had one of the best defenses this year and just harassed Lamar Jackson into a 15-for-31 performance that ended with him on the bench in a blowout.

Houston Texans

The Texans get the other side of the QB injury coin. Tyrod Taylor, who had the team playing respectable football, may return this week. That would give a large boost from the horrifying play of Davis Mills, and the 17-point team total here actually reflects that as the Texans have hovered around 14 in recent weeks.

Other Notable Implied Team Totals

Green Bay Packers

The Packers usually adorn the highest totals part of this article. Among NFL Week 8 implied team totals, they’re instead closer to the bottom with a projection of 23.

That rare territory comes from facing a tough Cardinals defense on the road while also missing superstar WR Davante Adams and one of his sidekicks, Allen Lazard. Both find themselves on the COVID list with no time to clear protocol. And who knows whether any more teammates will follow them.

Carolina Panthers

Perhaps no offense has performed as poorly as that of the Panthers lately. Since Week 5, they unsurprisingly rank dead last in offense EPA/play. Their high-water mark over that period in terms of yards per play was 4.5 against the Vikings, with much of that coming against prevent defense late. They just hit rock bottom — one would hope, anyway — with a ghastly 2.8 yards per play against the Giants.

Sam Darnold’s solid early season numbers appear to be an opponent- and situation-driven mirage. Their total of 22 against the Falcons actually looks high if they don’t get things fixed in a hurry.
