Reasons The Steelers Can Cover The Spread

With Tua Tagovailoa expected back after the back to back concussions he suffered in Weeks 3 and 4, the Steelers defense is getting to play against a Quarterback who could be rusty. If Tua isn’t up to the form he showed in the first two weeks, then the Dolphins might end up in a predictable script.

The Steelers rush Defense is 8th in yards/rush conceded and 6th in PFF’s grades, which is hugely disadvantageous for a Mike McDaniels offense. If the Steelers can get stops, then their offense needs to put up less to cover the touchdown spread.

Why The Dolphins can cover the spread

If Tua is actually healthy – which is no guarantee, but the Dolphins hopefully won’t jeopardize his health again – then the Dolphins offense should be good. If they can use their speed on the outside to their advantage, even a simplified offense can make up for any rust Tua may have on longer throws.

The Dolphins Defense, while not good, has been good against the run – 7th in rush defense DVOA and 3rd by PFF grading. If the Dolphins can swallow up Najee Harris, then the Steelers are going to end up in a lot of obvious passing downs, which should make Kenny Pickett’s life harder.

Reasons to bet the over

The Dolphins’ speed means that they have to the ability to take plays that shouldn’t go for too much to the house, which would be crucial for hitting this over. If Tyreek Hill can take some short passes and make more out of them, it speeds up the game.

The other thing that suggests an over is the Steelers’ ball hawking defense. While the Steelers D hasn’t been good this year, they have created 10 takeaways so far this season, which opens up the door to short fields and/or defensive touchdowns.

Reasons to bet the under

Tua’s potential for rust, and the fact that the Dolphins offense can stagnate if they’re playing a good run defense, means the Dolphins might not be able to score. If they can’t, trusting Kenny Pickett to run an efficient offense is a scary proposition.

Throw in the fact that the Dolphins won’t want to risk too many hits on Tua, and a slow paced, run heavy game suits both teams’ strengths, which reduces the chance of an Over.

Steelers vs. Dolphins Props: Matchups To Watch For

Najee Harris Rushing Yards: A successful night for the Steelers offense starts and ends with Najee. The Steelers won’t want to put too much on Pickett’s shoulders right away, so Najee will need to keep the Steelers in third and manageable if they’re to have any chance in this game.

Tua Rushing Yards: Given what Tua’s been through, it seems doubtful the Dolphins are going to want to risk him taking more damage than he needs to. Taking a Tua under on the idea that he’ll avoid hits at all costs could be a sensible path forward.

Final Thoughts

The Steelers offense has to prove they deserve to get any credit before they can be taken too seriously. Pickett moved the ball decently against the Bills, yes, but he did so in mostly garbage time against a prevent defense.

On the other side of the ball, the Steelers aren’t what they were expected to be. Middling by DVOA and PFF’s grades, bottom half in yards/play conceded, and 29th in Pressure rate while blitzing around league average, the Steelers don’t have a fearsome defense.

The case for the Steelers is mostly just a case against the Dolphins at this point, who are a wild card. If Tua plays, there’s gonna be a considerable question of whether he can be the player he was pre-injury. If he’s not – if he’s a version of 2021 Tua – then can he cover a touchdown spread?

The problem for the Steelers is the Mike McDaniels offense should be able to make Tua at the least decent. Teddy Bridgewater was top half of the league last week in EPA despite coming in in relief. The McDaniels offense should be enough for Miami to put up a decent amount of points, at which point Pittsburgh will struggle to match it.

Best of luck betting Steelers Dolphins odds.
