Giants VS Jaguars BETTING INSIGHTS

Reasons The Giants Can Cover The Spread

The Giants have managed to go 5-1 throughout the first 6 weeks, aided by the eighth-best offense by EPA and the eighth-best rush offense by yards/play. The Giants have almost entirely abandoned pass heavy game scripts, which has helped them keep defenses expecting.

When they do pass, they can be reasonable efficient – 12th in Passing DVOA – and they’ve managed to win games. The Jaguars are the worst tackling team by PFF’s grades, which could be a problem with the heavy dose of Saquon Barkley coming at them.

Why The Jaguars can cover the spread

The Giants might be one of the most fraudulent 5-1 teams of all time. 13th in Offensive DVOA, 30th in Defense, the Giants have won these five games mostly through pure luck. The Giants are 7th in net Turnovers, 4th in 3rd Down Defense and 5th in Red Zone Defense.

The Giants are 22nd in yards/play on offense and 23rd on defense, against a team that’s 11th and 9th respectively. The Jaguars have massively outgained their opponents the last two weeks in losses, and are 8th in overall DVOA, while the Giants are 18th.

Reasons to bet the over

The Giants defense is the worst unit in this game by far – 30th by DVOA, 27th by PFF – which means that Trevor Lawrence should be able to get his points with it. If Lawrence can lead the Jaguars to 20+ points, which they have scored in every game this season, then this low total looks appealing.

If Daniel Jones has to throw more than he has this season, the Giants could see a return to his bad decisions, or some big plays, both of which would speed up the game. If the Jaguars tackling deficiencies come home to haunt them, Saquon ripping off a big gain would also help hit this under.

Reasons to bet the under

The Giants are always liable to hit the under just because of how slow they play. With their run heavy offense, the clock is ticking for a greater share of the game and there is just more time lost in the shuffle, reducing the number of plays.

The Giants are 20th in Points/play and the Jaguars are 9th in points/play defense, which suggests that at least on that side of the ball, if and when the Giants score, it’ll be long, methodical drives that slow the game to a halt – all good for the under.

Giants vs. Jaguars Props: Matchups To Watch For

Saquon Barkley Rushing Yards: If the Giants are going to be able to stay on script in this game, they’re going to need a big game from Saquon. The Giants have been one of the most run-dominant teams this season, and Saquon’s been a key cog in their offense.

If Barkley manages to do well early, they’ll be able to keep up the rushing later, which makes establishing him early crucial for the Giants.

Trevor Lawrence Rushing Yards: The Giants blitz more than any team in football, which means that Lawrence will have to avoid a lot of blitzes this game. If he’s able to get around the blitz, the rushing lanes will be open, which might end up being crucial for the Jaguars offense stringing together scoring drives.

Final Thoughts

The fact that the Giants are still getting three points as the team with three more wins proves just how little faith the market has in the Giants. The thing is, there’s nothing to suggest that the Giants should have earned that faith.

The Giants successes are mostly a function of variance and luck. Ability to get stops on 3rd down and in the Red Zone is mostly a function of luck – and if that flips, the Giants defense falls apart. 30th in Defensive DVOA and 27th by PFF’s grading, the Jaguars should be able to slice through the Giants.

On the other side of the ball, the Jaguars defense is 10th by DVOA and 9th against the rush, which is more important against the Giants. If the Giants get into negative script, they either need Lawrense to throw the game away like Lamar did last week or Daniel Jones to step up. It’s possible, but not likely.

The Giants have been a fun story so far this season, but they’ve been extremely lucky to win this much so far. Betting against the team who’s been incredibly lucky and on the team whose luck has been atrocious is generally more advisable than betting on the luck continuing.

Speaking of luck, best of luck betting Giants Jaguars odds this week.
