Week 6 Power Rankings

In this feature, we’ll highlight three teams trending up or downward in our NFL power rankings. Keep in mind, TheLines’ Week 6 power rankings aren’t predicated on futures markets, despite the possibility there might be value available. Instead, they’re evaluating a team’s outlook on a week-by-week basis. The ranks are a composite of eight staff members — in the order of which team they would have favored on a neutral field this week.

No. 18 New York Giants ()

Normally, a team in the upper echelon of our Week 6 power rankings rises the most. The Giants buck that trend, though, tying for the biggest leap this time around (6). This shift comes after their upset win against the Packers in London.

Brian Daboll, ex-Bills offensive coordinator-turned-New York head coach, has completely altered the offense for the better. Instead of implementing more 11 personnel packages, which most of the league has done, Daboll has been extremely creative with his 12-13 personnel looks. In turn, Daniel Jones, a healthy Saquon Barkley & Co. have manufactured the NFL’s 11th-highest EPA per play to date.

Moreover, Leonard Williams (knee) and Azzez Ojulari (knee) — two key members of the front-seven — could return for a home date versus the Ravens. The current point spread for that game is below.

Week 6 Spread: Giants

No. 19 New England Patriots ()

Despite losing Mac Jones (ankle) for the time being, the Patriots have covered in consecutive games, including a blowout victory over the Lions as three-point home favorites. They’ve leapt up six spots as well.

Western Kentucky product Bailey Zappe has filled in admirably, and their defense deserves credit, too, surrendering the league’s ninth-fewest EPA per play. They’ve relied on man-to-man coverage — for the most part — despite lacking a true shutdown corner. It’s paying off, as New England’s pass defense is yielding the NFL’s sixth-lowest Dropback Success Rate (SR).

For context, a play is deemed successful if it produces:

  • 50 percent of the yards needed to move the chains on first down
  • 70 percent of yards to gain on second down
  • 100 percent of yards to gain on third or fourth down

The Patriots’ next test comes against the Browns, which find themselves at No. 13 in our Week 6 power rankings.

Week 6 Spread: Patriots

  • Who’s lowest on the Patriots? Brett Collson (No. 21)

No. 21 Denver Broncos ()

Following a horrific offensive display against the Colts, the Broncos dropped off the most of any team in our Week 6 power rankings (6).

For one, Russell Wilson showcases the ninth-lowest Completion Percentage Over Expected (CPOE) — a metric that isolates a quarterback’s performance from the opposition — while dealing with a shoulder injury. He and Denver head coach Nathaniel Hackett have also combined to deliver the seventh-lowest EPA per play in the process.

Unless the Broncos’ ground game magically comes alive at the Chargers, good luck trusting Wilson to “cook.”

Week 6 Spread: Broncos

  • Who’s highest on the Broncos? Eli Hershkovich (No. 14)
  • Who’s lowest on the Broncos? Brett Gibbons and Nate Weitzer (No. 24)
