NFL Week 5 betting lines

Unlike in September, there weren’t many “big” upsets across the league. The biggest underdog to cover from this past weekend was Washington (+8.5) at Philadelphia, and the Commanders failed to win outright in overtime. Here we will examine how look-ahead lines have adjusted ahead of Week 5.

If you’re unfamiliar with NFL look-ahead lines, they give bettors a peek at projected point spreads for the following week’s games. Limits on these betting odds are normally lower than usual, but that shouldn’t be the purpose of how gamblers perceive them.

Given that bettors tend to have their fair share of recency bias, look-ahead lines can offer a clear, impartial snapshot of teams, according to the oddsmakers.

Texans (+1.5) at Falcons (-1.5)

Before Atlanta fell to Jacksonville in London, failing to cover, it was a 3.5-point home favorite for this tilt. It’s shrunk below the key number of a field goal after that result, along with Houston’s upset victory over Pittsburgh.

In that affair, Texans rookie quarterback C.J. Stroud produced the fourth-most EPA per play among qualified signal callers. He’s now risen above Falcons tailback Bijan Robinson as the favorite to win NFL Rookie of the Year. Meanwhile, Ridder — Stroud’s counterpart — notched the third-fewest EPA per dropback in Week 4.

Although gamblers may run to the betting window (figuratively) to back Houston, an Atlanta bounce-back wouldn’t be surprising.

Ravens (-4.5) at Steelers (+4.5)

Similar to the previous contest, this point spread has shifted near the key number of three.

However, this one ticked above it, thanks to Baltimore’s dominant win over the Deshaun Watson-less Browns. The Ravens surrendered the second-fewest EPA per play overall to rookie QB Dorian Thompson-Robinson and Cleveland’s offense.

In Pittsburgh’s aforementioned defeat to the Texans, the Steelers also suffered potentially significant injuries to QB Kenny Pickett (knee), left tackle Dan Moore Jr. (knee), tight end Pat Freiermuth (hamstring), and defensive end DeMarvin Leal (concussion).

Granted, Baltimore is fairly banged up in its own right. That list lengthened with right tackle Moses Morgan (shoulder) going down on Sunday. But with 2020 NFL MVP Lamar Jackson healthy and playing at a high level, the Steelers reeling in an upset win will be an arduous task.

Jets (+2.5) at Broncos (-2.5)

Zach Wilson finally looked like a legitimate starting NFL quarterback this past Sunday night. He has a great shot at shining in back-to-back weeks considering how poor the Broncos defense has been. Look-ahead lines had the Broncos -3 for this one.

Chiefs (-3.5) at Vikings (+3.5)

The line for this one was actually Chiefs -6 prior to last weekend’s games. It has been whittled down to Vikings +3.5 in most spots. The total for Kansas City versus Minnesota is 52.5 points.

Eagles (-4) at Rams (+4)

The lookahead line for Eagles versus Rams had Philadelphia as a -6 betting favorite. It is now down to Eagles -4 at most sportsbooks. The Rams are an NFL best 3-0-1 against the spread so far this season. LA will see the return of star WR Cooper Kupp from injury on Sunday.

Cowboys (+3.5) at 49ers (-3.5)

The Niners went from field-goal favorites to a hair above that number after winning by three scores against the Cardinals. But was that movement warranted? Keep in mind that Dallas just tallied a rebound victory over the Patriots.

Moreover, San Francisco has quietly let up the fifth-most EPA per carry, which Tony Pollard & Co. should (theoretically) take advantage of.
