NFL Week 3 Look-Ahead Lines: The Broncos Hype Train Rolls On

Written By FairwayJay on September 16, 2021

To the surprise of many bettors in Week 1, NFL underdogs went 12-4 ATS with nine outright winners. There are some major market adjustments from the Week 2 look-ahead lines, and Week 2 of the NFL season is often an overreaction to Week 1 results. Keep that in mind as you evaluate NFL Week 3 look-ahead lines.

Prior to the upcoming week’s matchups, TheLines is here to provide you additional resources and information. Let’s begin.

Week 3 Primetime Games

Week 1 prime time matchups saw two games reach 60 points and all three games went over the total, averaging 56 points per game. Thursday Night Football will feature a couple teams that won their openers – the Panthers visiting the Texans.

Sunday Night Football Week 3 is a good one – Green Bay Packers at the San Francisco 49ers.

Week 3 is highlighted by four division games, including the Philadelphia Eagles at Dallas Cowboys on Monday Night Football Sept. 27.

Potential Week 2 Impact on Week 3 Look-Ahead Lines

Saints at Patriots

The Saints will be playing back-to-back road games when they visit New England in Week 3. The look-ahead line is only Patriots -1, but the preseason advance line from BetMGM was New England -7. This line will likely be higher, especially if New Orleans loses at Carolina in Week 2. A big bet of nearly $300,000 came in on the Saints (-3.5) to beat the Panthers at Caesars Sportsbook.

Seahawks at Vikings

One of the key line adjustments in Week 2 was the Arizona Cardinals from -1.5 to -3.5 vs. the Minnesota Vikings with the line passing through a key number. A Vikings win would move them from their current status as a 2.5-point home underdog vs. the Seahawks. The lookahead line of Seattle -2.5 is an overreaction to Week 1 results as the preseason line had Seattle +1.5.

Chargers at Chiefs

Los Angeles Chargers at Kansas City Chiefs will be one of the most bet games of Week 3. AFC West teams started 4-0 in Week 1. The Chiefs will also be a popular teaser bet in their home game against the LA Chargers. It will be both teams’  first division game of the season. MVP favorite Patrick Mahomes and up-and-coming star Justin Herbert should display their skillset in a likely shootout.

Jets at Broncos

Some significant adjustments in season wins following Week 1 games including the Denver Broncos — from 8.5 to 10.5 before being bet back down to 9.5. The Broncos can start 2-0 with back-to-back road wins, and Colorado fans will be ready for their return to Mile High for Week 3. We’re seeing a roughly 2.5 to 3.5-point swing on the Jaguars vs. Broncos () Week 2 spread — the look-ahead line was around Denver -3.

The Denver Broncos will host the New York Jets in Week 3 for their home opener, and we’re seeing additional line adjustments from -5.5 on the preseason BetMGM line to -8.5 on the FanDuel Sportsbook look-ahead line. The Broncos could be a popular teaser bet in Week 3.

Colts at Titans

The Tennessee Titans and Indianapolis Colts were the two favorites to win the AFC South. Both teams lost in Week 1, and each team is an underdog of more than three points in Week 2. Will one of these teams go 0-3 to start the season?

Buccaneers at Rams

There’s another huge matchup between Super Bowl contenders in the Tampa Bay Buccaneers at the Los Angeles Rams. The Rams are very slight favorites, and not much will impact the line other than a potential key injury. Star quarterbacks Tom Brady and MVP contender Matthew Stafford could be challenged against two of the league’s elite defenses, respectively.

Dolphins at Raiders

The Miami Dolphins knocked the Las Vegas Raiders out of a potential playoff spot in Week 16 last season with a 26-25 win in Las Vegas. Miami accumulated just 253 total yards in victory, and Raider Nation will be in attendance this time supporting the Silver and Black again after a thrilling OT win to open the season on Monday Night Football. A Week 2 loss by Miami at home to Buffalo may see this line rise, favoring the redemption-minded Raiders.

HOW TO USE LOOK-AHEAD LINES

TheLines turns to FanDuel Sportsbook for opening look-ahead lines for next week’s NFL games. Bookmakers begin posting these lines every Thursday — a full week before the ensuing week’s games on the schedule.

These look-ahead lines allow you a sneak peek at the projected lines for the following week’s games. This information from a leading online sportsbook will help provide lessons in understanding lines and projections before the current week’s games are played.

The tendency for many bettors is to overreact to the previous week’s scores and results. The look-ahead lines provide a sense of stability from the oddsmaker, who is unbiased in setting the lines in advance.

Bettors can also gain an edge or find value in the lines and odds once the current week’s lines are released. They not only apply that based on potential overreaction to the recent week’s results, but also by using team-by-team insight.

That includes key injuries, travel and scheduling situations, and use of NFL power rankings. Making adjustments is part of the process, along with accounting for teams’ strengths, weaknesses, against-the-spread angles and personnel matchups.
