Lions vs. Packers Betting Insights
Reasons The Lions Can Cover The Spread
The Lions have won 4 of their last 5 games, and outside of the Carolina game, the Lions have been dominant in recent weeks. Their victories over the Jaguars and Vikings have been dominant, and the Lions would be easily the best team the Packers have played in this winning streak.
Throw in the fact that Dan Campbell will keep the team motivated under any circumstances and that the Lions would love to get a winning season after years at the bottom of the league standings.
Reasons The Packers Can Cover The Spread
It’s absolutely fair to say that the Lions got screwed by the NFL putting this game on Sunday Night Football, given that a Seattle win at 4PM Eastern kills their playoff chances. Even if you believe Dan Campbell would never rest guys, the Lions will still be much more aggressive if their incentives are a playoff spot, as opposed to pyrrhic victory of spoiling Green Bay’s day.
The Packers have been very good in recent weeks, and they have found some offensive rhythm, scoring 24+ in 5 straight games. If they can do that against the Lions, and especially get an early lead, Detroit might not be able to come back.
Reasons to bet the over
Assuming the Lions keep their offensive starters in this game, this game will be a shootout. The Packers defense is still relatively weak – bottom half of the league by both DVOA and PFF grades – and the Lions are a top 10 defense on most offensive metrics.
Reasons to bet the under
The only way this game goes under is if the teams get run happy in this game. Both teams sport bottom 10 run defenses by both DVOA and PFF, and if both teams lean on the run game, then they could just end up in a situation where the clock ticks all game long and the game is paced down.
Lions vs. Packers Props: Matchups To Watch For
Amon-Ra St. Brown Receiving Yards – The Lions will be reliant on St. Brown in this game if they want to win this game, because their offense relies on a finesse passing game to convert third downs and keep the chains moving. Against the Packers’ weak run defense, the Lions will have a lot of 2nd and 3rd downs where they can run or pass, and slants to St. Brown are a heavy staple on those types of plays.
Final Thoughts
Green Bay are a bit of a paper tiger at this point, because while they have won 4 straight at this point, they’ve yet to beat a good team. Beating the Bears and the Rams isn’t impressive at all, they beat the Dolphins only because Tua got concussed again, played through it and then threw 3 interceptions after that, and then beat up on a fraudulent Vikings team.
The Lions, on the other side, are riding a high, with 4 wins in 5 games. If the Lions are in play to make the playoffs in this game, they’re very live to win this, and even if they aren’t, Dan Campbell still should keep them playing hard.
All of this said, it’s still Aaron Rodgers against Jared Goff, and that’s not always an exciting prospect for Lions backers. If Rodgers meets the moment, the Packers will win. But a lot of people are just penciling in that Green Bay will roll, and that’s a disservice to a Lions team that is genuinely good.
Best of luck betting Lions vs. Packers odds on SNF.
