Which Team Will Cover The Spread?
After finishing with the fourth-highest Dropback EPA in Week 14, the betting market has fallen in love with 49ers rookie QB Brock Purdy. As San Francisco aims to clinch the NFC West with a victory, we’ve seen the spread shift above the key number of a field goal.
Nevertheless, Kyle Shanahan’s offense employs the league’s 10th-highest rushing rate, and that will likely remain the case with Purdy dealing with an oblique injury. Shanahan hasn’t declared Purdy as the starter for this week, yet he did note that Purdy wouldn’t worsen his injury by suiting up in Seattle.
Keep in mind, Seattle is allowing the 12th-lowest Rushing Success Rate across the NFL. For context, a play is successful if teams produce:
- 50 percent of the yards needed to move the chains on first down
- 70 percent of yards to gain on second down
- 100 percent of yards to gain on third or fourth down
Hence, the 49ers may not be as efficient on the ground as one would initially expect. But Al Woods’ absence on the Seahawks’ defensive front hurts that notion.
On the flip side, Geno Smith is up against arguably one of the league’s premier defenses, especially against the pass. While he’s exceeded expectations in his ninth season as a pro, he may not be as fortunate this time against DeMeco Ryans’ pressure-heavy unit.
