Patriots vs. Cardinals Betting Insights

Reasons The Patriots Can Cover The Spread

The Patriots are what we thought they were – a bad offense and an elite defense. The Pats are 3rd in Defensive DVOA and 12th by PFF, by both metrics the only above average unit on the field. Yes the Pats aren’t good offensively, but Mac Jones did look better against the Vikings in putting up 382 yards.

If the Pats Offensive Line can hold up in this game – they’re around league average in Pressure Allowed against a blitz happy Cardinals Defense – then Jones should be able to pick apart a porous secondary. If that’s the case, Jones should be able to score enough to win the Cardinals this game.

Why The Cardinals can cover the spread

The Pats one defensive weakness is their play against Rushing quarterbacks, as Justin Fields and Josh Allen have shown in recent weeks. With both running for 75+ yards against the Pats, their inability to stop rushing QBs is a huge problem with Kyler Murray the opponent this week.

If the Cardinals can get Kyler going on the ground, then the issues with their horrible offense can be mitigated. It’s unclear why a Cardinals team with the on paper talent is bottom 5 in both DVOA and PFF grades, but if Kyler can keep drives alive, he is the better QB in this game.

Reasons to bet the over

The Cardinals Defense is a disaster, allowing the second most points/play of any defense in the league. Given this, if the Cardinals get behind early and have to adopt a quick, fast paced, Kyler running offense, this total will look very low in hindsight.

Reasons to bet the under

The two offenses in this game are 29th and 21st by DVOA, which is just not good and could see a lot of drives either stall out between the 40s or see a lot of drives end in field goals, neither which help an Over and are dreams for an under.

Patriots vs. Cardinals Props: Matchups To Watch For

Kyler Murray Rushing Yards: given the Patriots are unable to stop rushing quarterbacks, this has to be the play. With how Justin Fields ran all over the Pats on Monday Night Football earlier this year – 82 yards in the rain – Kyler is going to be all over the same path. With the Pats weakness clear, even a Cardinals team not known for optimal strategy can’t mess this up.

Final Thoughts

The problem with this game is it’s a battle of two very clear matchup edges, one to each side. On the one hand, the Patriots can get destroyed by a running QB – or even just the mere idea that a mobile QB might run. The Cardinals will be able to play an option and have the Patriots on edge all game long, if they want to.

The other matchup is, of course, the best coach in NFL history against Kliff Kingsbury, who is nobody’s idea of a tactical mastermind. The coaching disparity is one of the biggest in the league, and trusting Kliff to make optimal decisions – or just not idiotic ones – feels a bridge too far.

With the Patriots, there’s no reason to trust Mac Jones at this point – trusting him is a deeply terrifying prospect at the best of times, and if the Cardinals, who are 3rd in Pressure Rate, get home, he’ll make mistakes. If the Pats can give him time, then he will probably have open passing lanes. Best of luck wagering on the Patriots Cardinals spread and other MNF odds.
