Chiefs vs. Chargers Betting Insights

Reasons The Chiefs Can Cover The Spread

The Chiefs project to be fairly sizable beneficiaries of the Chargers injuries woes, with the Chargers praying that one or both of Mike Williams and Keenan Allen can be available. Obviously if they miss again the Chargers will be in deep trouble, but even if they play, it’s likely they won’t yet be 100%.

Without those offensive weapons, the Chargers will struggle to put up enough points, especially considering the Chiefs have a 28.5 point team total. If the Chargers can’t score efficiently, then the Chiefs should be able to cover.

Why The Chargers can cover the spread

If the Chargers can get their guys back, this could be a nice buy low opportunity on the Chargers offense – if they’re healthy. Justin Herbert was efficient in the first half of the game against the Niners Defense, and the Chiefs D isn’t anything special – 22nd by DVOA.

If the Chargers get their guys back, then they will be able to take advantage of the porous Chiefs D, and keep this game competitive. And, as we know from Week 2, if the Chiefs leave the back door open for Herbert, the Chargers will be able to take advantage.

Reasons to bet the over

If the Chargers have their weapons available then this game should pace up, especially if the game paces up. Mahomes is likely without JuJu Smith-Schuster, who has been his go to for quick passes. If the Chiefs have to air it out more and connect, then the Chargers will be forced to match their pace – and if their have their weapons, they should be able to.

Reasons to bet the under

If the Chargers don’t have their guys it’s incredibly hard to see how they’ll be able to put up enough points to help get this total above 51. With such a high total and so much variance in what might come from one offense, there’s a lot of reasons to be skeptical of the Over.

Chiefs vs. Chargers Props: Matchups To Watch For

Kadarius Toney Receptions: Without JuJu, the newly acquired Toney is likely going to have to replicate his role in the offense. It’s clear the Chiefs don’t value Hardman as anything other than a wind sprinter, so Toney will have to be the one who takes all the slot snaps and easy catches. Whether or not he can make those into big plays is unclear, but he should get a high volume of targets in the JuJu role.

Final Thoughts

This game, at the end of the day, is fundamentally a bet on whether or not the Chargers can get right offensively. If they can, then they can cover this game easily and potentially even win. In the Staley era, the Chargers have always played the Chiefs close, as Week 2 showed.

The problem is, this is the most limited Chargers offense of any of the matchups in this era of the team. If Allen and Williams come back and are healthy, then the Chargers should be able to outperform their mediocre offensive metrics and put up a meaningful amount of points.

If they aren’t on the field, or aren’t their best coming off extended absences, then the Chargers offense will probably look like it did against the Niners – inconsistent and sputtering. There’s almost nothing about this game that’s interesting from a Chiefs perspective – they’ll score their points, and the question just becomes what the Chargers can do in response.

Betting on two wideouts who haven’t played in weeks to come in and immediately save an offense is probably a bad bet, and if that’s the case, then the Chargers are in deep trouble. Best of luck betting the Chiefs chargers spread and props.
