Saints vs. Steelers Betting Insights
Reasons The Saints Can Cover The Spread
The Steelers offense is a disaster – 24th by DVOA, 23rd by PFF, and 31st by yards/play. Some of that was from the Trubisky era, sure, but Kenny Pickett is 31st in the league in EPA/Play.
On the other side of the ball, the Saints offense did look bad last week, but Dalton is still 14th in the league in EPA/play and the Saints as a whole are 11th by PFF. The rushing game is effective – 4th by Rushing Success Rate, 9th by yards/rush – and if the Steelers don’t project to score much, then the Saints should score enough to win.
Why The Steelers can cover the spread
The Steelers have one of the biggest rest advantages you can have on the schedule – they’re gaining a full 8 days of rest on the Saints. Usually bye week effects can be overstated, but when the Bears came out of their bye, their offense was better designed for Justin Fields. Steelers fans may hope that the bye week can bring about similar changes to help Pickett.
The other way the Steelers win this game is simple – Andy Dalton goes full Dalton and starts throwing picks. He is a fan of doing that, and while the Steelers Pass D has been much worse this year than in the past, it’s still very good at ball hawking. If they can run back a Dalton duck, or even just get a short field, they can easily take advantage.
Reasons to bet the over
The Over hitting in this game either needs Alvin Kamara taking one or two long runs to speed up the game or the quarterbacks to give away some free points, because these two offenses are not good.
Reasons to bet the under
The fact that this total is still at 40 is a great sign for under bettors. The offenses are just unreliable at the best of times, and if the Saints can get out to a bit of an early lead, they’ll be content to just run the ball down Pittsburgh’s throat, which will shorten the game, reduce the number of plays, and kill clock.
Dalton throwing more red zone interceptions would also help.
Saints vs. Steelers Props: Matchups To Watch For
Alvin Kamara Rushing Yards: the Saints offense floundered on Monday night in large part because they couldn’t get Kamara going. There was no offensive rhythm without him, and falling behind meant they had to abandon the run, which killed them. If the Saints want to avoid a repeat, lots of Kamara is the answer.
Nothing about the Steelers suggests they should win this game except their rest advantage, but that is a tricky thing to dismiss. The Saints played on Monday night and have to fly up to Pittsburgh to play a rested Steelers team.
If the Steelers were smart, they would have seen what Chicago has done by retooling the offense in the bye and unleashed Justin Fields, and if they have, we might see a better Fields. The problem is, that’s hope, not known yet.
The problem is the Saints aren’t actually any better than the Steelers so far this year – the Saints are 23rd by DVOA, the Steelers are 25th – and they’re on a short week, with travel. The Saints subjectively seem better than the Steelers, but there’s no actual evidence for it, and when the offense is bad, it feels horrible.
Best of luck betting the Saints Steelers spread, as well as the rest of the NFL Week 10 odds.
