Vikings TE TJ Hockenson Over Receiving Yards

TJ Hockenson is having the best season of his career, on pace for over 1,100 receiving yards. His 95 targets place him sixth in the league, and over the last two games with Josh Dobbs, he’s been targeted an eye-popping 27 times. This number will likely decrease slightly when Justin Jefferson returns from injury. However, the attention that Jefferson draws upon his return will still free up the Iowa product for significant gains.

He gets a Denver Broncos defense that has been weak against TEs tonight. The Broncos have allowed the most receiving yards to tight ends with 620. On Monday night against the Bills, they allowed rookie TE Dalton Kincaid to reel in five of his six targets for 51 yards. Three of the last four tight ends against the Broncos have gone over 50 receiving yards, the lone exception being Luke Musgrave for the Packers. They don’t defend tight ends well, ranking 26th in DVOA against the position.

Since safety Justin Simmons returned to action in Week 5, the team has been particularly stout against WR1s, limiting Garrett Wilson to 54 yards and Stefon Diggs to 34 yards. If they continue this dominance against primary receivers, Dobbs will be forced to move the ball using weapons other than Jordan Addison.

Javonte Williams Under Rushing Yards

Although Javonte Williams has been on a tear the last three games with at least 79 rushing yards in each, he’s benefited from playing two subpar run defenses. The Packers and Chiefs grade out in the bottom ten in rush EPA, and in each game, the North Carolina product was able to eclipse 80 yards on the ground. The problem for Williams is that he has been inefficient with his 48 rushing attempts in the last two weeks (3.41 YPC). I expect those inefficiencies to continue against a Vikings defense, allowing 3.6 YPC to primary running backs in the previous four weeks.

Furthermore, over the last five weeks, the Vikings’ defense ranks third in rush EPA on first down. That doesn’t bode well for a predictable Sean Payton offense that has run the ball at the tenth-highest clip on first down over the last three games. If Payton remains adamant about running the ball on first down to set up the play action, it could be a long day for Russel Wilson and company.
