5:18 p.m. ET update: The NFL schedule release remains May 11 at 8:00 p.m. ET.
This coming Thursday is a highly-anticipated day on the calendar for NFL odds. With plenty of fanfare, the 2023 NFL schedule release is usually paired with a primetime broadcast on ESPN. At least, that’s normally the plan. According to NBC Sports’ Peter King, the NFL could delay the schedule release past May 11.
King reports that NFL commissioner Roger Goodell is expected to meet with the schedule makers on Monday. The reasoning behind the delay is that the schedule’s marquee matchups — opening island games, Thanksgiving, Christmas Eve, and the like — aren’t totally set in stone.
As is tradition, the defending Super Bowl champions kick off the NFL campaign on Thursday night against another high profile opponent. That would mean the Kansas City Chiefs are awaiting their Week 1 opponent. Potential matchups include the Chargers, Bills, Bengals, or a Super Bowl rematch with the Eagles. Bettors who are antsy to wager on NFL Week 1 opening odds may have to hold their breath.
Should Goodell meet with those schedule makers, we’ll know more by the end of Monday. Check back for frequent updates on this story.
Chiefs Headline Super Bowl 58 Futures
The Chiefs () once again top Super Bowl 58 odds boards. Patrick Mahomes continues to redefine the quarterback position, and the defending champions made some additions to the offensive line in free agency. Kansas City tops the defending NFC champion Eagles (), Bills (), and NFC runner-up 49ers (). The upstart Jets have also jumped to after landing four-time league MVP Aaron Rodgers in a trade.
The 2023 NFL season begins on Thursday, September 7.
