Key 2024 Sunday Night Football Matchups
Week 1: Los Angeles Rams @ Detroit Lions
A rematch of Wild Card Weekend and yet another Stafford homecoming kicks off SNF. The Rams will be trying to build on an unexpectedly good 2023. The loss of Aaron Donald will hurt the Rams defense. That said, if Stafford is upright, the Rams will at least try to throw all over the Lions. With Detroit having revamped their secondary this offseason, that’ll be one of the key matchups.
For the Lions, Jared Goff just signed a new contract. His new deal makes him one of the highest-paid quarterbacks in the league. Despite elite production and metrics over the last two years, Goff always carries the chance of turning back into a pumpkin. That’s the risk, but without Aaron Donald destroying worlds, Goff should be fine.
Week 2: Chicago Bears @ Houston Texans
Week 2’s Sunday Night Football matchup sees the best QB of the 2023 Draft class face off against the number 1 pick the year later. With hopes high in Chicago that Caleb Williams can replicate CJ Stroud’s rookie season success, this matchup will be a crucial test for the Bears’ revamped offense.
Williams has a WR core of Rome Odunze and Keenan Allen added to DJ Moore. Williams will not be able to blame a lack of weapons for his outcomes. Stroud was the runaway Offensive Rookie Of The Year winner in 2023. He was so good that he revived hope in a Texans fanbase that hasn’t had much in recent years.
Week 8: Dallas Cowboys @ San Francisco 49ers
This game, a repeat of a Sunday Night Football matchup in 2023, proved that Dallas’ defense could be beaten by elite offensive talent and scheming. The Niners are currently running back their explosive offense. Whether or not the Cowboys can defend better after a sleepy offseason will be crucial.
With Dak Prescott not yet signing an extension, he will have to prove in big games that he’s worth the money he wants. After only one playoff game win in three seasons, this game will serve as an opportunity for Prescott to show his value.
Week 12: Philadelphia Eagles @ Los Angeles Rams
Thanksgiving Sunday ends with a battle of 2023 playoff teams as the Eagles fly west to play the Rams. Philadelphia’s revamped secondary should improve their defense, and there’s plenty of offensive firepower to go around. Cooper Kupp and Puka Nacua are capable of great games, and the Rams will test Philly’s depth.
On the other side, Jalen Hurts will have more time to throw after Aaron Donald’s retirement. If that added time allows Hurts to get the deep ball back into his arsenal, then the Eagles could be back on track.
Week 16: Tampa Bay Buccaneers @ Dallas Cowboys
The Buccaneers are trying to build on their successes last year, and this could be a playoff preview. Baker Mayfield will want to succeed with both teams favored to make the playoffs. With Mike Evans re-signed this summer, the Bucs should be good. That is if Baker holds up his end of the bargain.
