Both teams have AFC Playoff positions locked up, and a win here locks up the top seed – and a bye – for the Chiefs. Smarter Same-Game Parlay: Chiefs at Steelers

The Chiefs need a win to secure the top seed in the AFC and the coveted bye. But they do have two chances at it; a win next week in Denver (a team that’s given Mahomes & Co. fits) also secures the bye. The Steelers also need a win here to maintain their standing in the AFC North. While a 34-17 loss at Baltimore complicated things, Pittsburgh could win out and clinch the division still.

At home, Pittsburgh is 5-1 on the season. Notably, the Steelers were without QB Russell Wilson in its lone loss (Week 5 vs. Dallas). They own home wins over the Chargers and Ravens and flipped the result of AFC North games against Baltimore and Cleveland in Acrisure Stadium. As a bonus to the offense, receiver George Pickens is expected to return.

On the other end, teams target the tight end with the seventh-most frequency against Pittsburgh. Part of that is out of necessity, as T.J. Watt often neutralizes longer-developing routes with his pass rush, forcing teams to turn to quick hitters. Kelce’s seen 8.4 targets per game since Thanksgiving. When the importance of the game rises, so does Kelce’s involvement. With a chance at the No. 1 seed up for grabs, expect Kelce to be a focal point.

Mahomes also appears to be moving fine. He picked up 15 yards on a single scamper in Week 16 and rushed for 16+ yards in three of his last five (nine times this year). Another response to Watt’s rush is that he likely tucks and runs a couple of times this game. Every time Mahomes rushed the ball 3+ times, he’s gained 16+ yards this year.
