How The 49ers Got Here
Despite an injury to Deebo Samuel and a shaky performance from Brock Purdy, the 49ers fended off the Packers in a back-and-forth NFC Divisional game. Christian McCaffrey carried the offense, scoring two go-ahead touchdowns, including the eventual game-winner. The start to the game – which featured a would-be pick-six dropped by Darnell Savage – looked reminiscent of the 49ers at Ravens game from the season. Purdy regrouped with some impressive throws, although his overall performance was less than inspiring.
It was the defense that sealed the deal. Linebacker Dre Greenlaw sealed the game with a highlight-worthy interception, capping a stellar game from himself. The two biggest issues moving forward: the rushing defense (Green Bay ran for 136 yards) and getting off the field on third down (the Packers converted 7-of-13 third downs). It’s clear the Niners can’t repeat last weekend’s performance or they’ll be going home short of the Super Bowl once again.
- NFC Wild Card Round: BYE
- NFC Divisional Round: Beat Packers 24-21
How The Lions Got Here
For those questioning the Lions’ draft strategy last cycle, Detroit has answered. Rookie back Jahmyr Gibbs was dynamic, including rushing in a 31-yard go-ahead score in the second half. Tight end Sam LaPorta continues his historic rookie season and Brian Branch disrupted the Buccaneers on defense. However, it was a Jared Goff to Amon-Ra St. Brown connection in the fourth quarter that sealed the Lions’ spot in their first NFC Championship Game in 33 years. Ford Field was a determining factor in both playoff wins this year.
Notably, the Lions haven’t won a road playoff game since 1957 (0-11 since). However, the 2023-24 season is Detroit’s to tear down stigmas and rebuild the face of the organization. Against a flawed, but extremely talented 49ers team, the Lions have an opportunity to clinch their first Super Bowl berth in franchise history.

- NFC Divisional Round: Beat Buccaneers 31-23
