NFL picks

Each week during the NFL season, I’ll assess NFL odds and write up my favorite wagers. I’ll take a look at odds for point spreads, moneyline odds, and totals throughout the season. These NFL picks are simply my favorites of the week, and I encourage readers to think critically and decide for themselves whether there’s any merit to the bets before adding to your bet slips, assigning big confidence pool points, or considering in NFL Survivor.

Let’s take a look at a couple of my favorite plays for NFL Week 2 odds. I’m backing my Super Bowl champion Chiefs for the second straight week, and I’m onto another under, this time Saints at Cowboys.

NFL Week 2 Picks: Chiefs -5.5 (-110)

I thought the Chiefs had a bit of an uneven Week 1 performance. They mostly outplayed the Ravens, and it probably should have been a comfortable win, but defensive miscues on high-leverage downs allowed Baltimore to stay in it more so than they should have. That said, these are to be expected at times with a young secondary. And most QBs can’t make the superhero plays that Lamar Jackson managed at times.

But the Chiefs’ struggles were nothing compared to what the Bengals put on the field. Facing a New England offense helmed by Jacoby Brissett, the Bengals failed to stop runs that they knew were coming. They allowed possibly the worst offense in the NFL to rack up 170 yards rushing.

On the other side of the ball, I was pretty high on this Cincy offense. However, they provided major cause for concern in Week 1. Joe Burrow didn’t attack down the field, took too many sacks, and generally didn’t look like his pre-injury self. The unit remains short-handed as well with Tee Higgins looking very likely to sit. I don’t trust this team to play from behind right now until I see some explosive passing plays.

Add in Andy Reid with extra rest and what should be a Chiefs team motivated to kick a rival while it’s down, and we could see the Bengals get pounded here.

Final Thoughts

Stopping Patrick Mahomes is next to impossible as it is, but the only prayer anyone probably has is making the Chiefs one-dimensional and then attacking these suspect tackles. If the Bengals can’t stop the run, I don’t know how they’re going to do that. I think K.C. should be touchdown favorites here until I see something better from Burrow, so I’m going to keep buying Chiefs odds and hope the champs don’t sleepwalk here.

NFL Week 2 Picks: Saints/Cowboys Under 47 (-115)

This game matches two offenses I was not high on at all coming into 2024, and I don’t see a reason to change my mind just yet.

We already know the Saints didn’t play a real NFL team in Week 1, so I’m mostly ignoring that game for handicapping purposes. I still expect this offensive line to struggle, and they’ve already picked up a couple of injuries with G Lucas Patrick and T Taliese Fuaga hurt in Week 1. Best of luck blocking Micah Parsons for your immobile QB, gentlemen.

Dallas, meanwhile, entered the season with a threadbare group of offensive weapons. Everything pretty much revolves around Dak Prescott throwing to CeeDee Lamb, with TE Jake Ferguson and WR Brandin Cooks available as the proverbial changeups when the other team is looking fastball.

Well, Ferguson will very likely miss this game after hurting his knee. The Cowboys are counting their blessings since it looked potentially season-ending, but this is a unit that can ill afford an injury.

I’m expecting the Cowboys to play a lot of slow-moving defensive battles, especially with their lack of explosive options in the running game. The Week 1 win over Cleveland only furthered my confidence in that sentiment.

Final Thoughts

Even indoors, I like these defenses’ chances of slowing the opposing offenses. Turnovers can be a concern for the under in some cases, but Derek Carr is sufficiently nitty that I expect him to take sacks and dump the ball off instead of panicking when he’s under pressure. My only real concern here is injuries to New Orleans’ secondary. S Tyrann Mathieu and CB Marshon Lattimore both missed Wednesday’s practice. But since I have to write this article before Thursday’s reports come out, I’m going to fire and hope for the best. Under 47 (-115), though I think Under 46.5 at normal juice is fine.
