With football season right around the corner, DraftKings Sportsbook released some data about NFL MVP futures this week. According to DraftKings, Carson Wentz has received by far the heaviest betting volume, with the Eagles quarterback generating 32 percent of handle on all MVP futures.
Wentz opened at +1400 to win the award in May and has been bet down to +1000 as of July 18.
Those numbers may come as a surprise to some, but it appears Wentz has many expecting big things in 2019. A DraftKings spokesperson said the book hasn’t seen any notably large bets on Wentz. However, the book gets plenty of Northeast action being in New Jersey where a lot of Eagles fans reside.
“We know we’re going to see a good amount of action on the local guys, and Wentz hasn’t had any bad years, he just hasn’t been healthy,” DraftKings director of sportsbook operations Johnny Avello said. “When he’s healthy he’s a viable contender and he could’ve won it the year they won the Super Bowl.”
Eagles QB earns respect from bettors
In his second year in the league (2017), Wentz shined with almost 3,300 passing yards and 33 TDs with only seven interceptions. In 2018, he upped his completion percentage from 60.6 in 2017 to 69.6 in only 11 games for 3,074 yards and 21 TDs.
Wentz has had injury concerns the last two seasons, including MCL and LCL tears (2017) and a spinal compression fracture (2018). The Eagles seem to agree with bettors on his promising future, coming to terms on a four-year, $54 million contract extension with Wentz in June.
Eagles head coach Doug Pederson told SiriusXM NFL that Wentz is now “the face of the franchise.” Bettors would certainly earn a nice payday if the MVP expectations turn into reality.
Some may be betting big on the Eagles QB, but Madden NFL isn’t as bullish on Wentz. EA Sports has him ranked 13th among QBs in the new version of the video game.
Mahomes, Brady and Luck among the favorites
Among the NFL MVP betting favorites are Patrick Mahomes (+500) and Tom Brady (+800). Mahomes had a massive sophomore year in 2018, throwing for more than 5,000 yards and a total of 50 TDs.
He took the MVP title in 2018, leading the Chiefs to a 12-4 record and AFC West title. What about Brady? Just his sixth Super Bowl victory at age 41. Brady last earned league MVP honors in 2017, and also earned the award in 2007 and 2010.
Andrew Luck also has +800 odds to win the MVP and is attracting 7.4 percent of handle on the 2019 award. Luck had a bounce-back year in 2018 after missing all of the 2017 season.
He led the Colts to a 10-6 record (second in the AFC South), throwing for almost 3,900 yards and 39 TDs.
Can a running back win MVP?
Another interesting nugget from DraftKings is the money going to Giants running back Saquon Barkley. After a rookie season with 1,307 rushing yards and 11 TDs, it looks like New York and New Jersey bettors are expecting big things in 2019.
The last RB to win league MVP was Adrian Peterson in 2012. Before that it was LaDainian Tomlinson in 2006. Barkley is getting 7.9 percent of MVP futures handle at DraftKings and would earn bettors a nice return at +4000.
The Giants signed former Viking Mike Remmers in the offseason to add to a rebuilt offensive line. He’s expected to help shore up the right tackle position and provide more running room for Barkley.
No doubt Drew Brees will be earning plenty of consideration among bettors for MVP at +1000. The Saints QB is coming off a nice season of almost 4,000 yards and 32 TDs, leading New Orleans to a 13-3 record and NFC South title. The Saints came up just short of a Super Bowl appearance.
The 12-timePro Bowler has yet to win a league MVP award but was Offensive Player of the Year in 2008 and 2011. He was also named the MVP of Super Bowl XLIV.
The NFL season kicks off on Sept. 5 with the Chicago Bears hosting the Green Bay Packers. Sixteen games later, some bettors will be cashing an NFL MVP ticket. It looks like many hope it will be Wentz.
