The matchups within the matchup are crucial for NFL bettors to understand each week throughout the season. These micromatchups, as some call them, often go a long way in determing the outcome of games, especially when one side has a significant talent advantage over the other. Let’s breakdown three of the biggest NFL matchups to watch within Week 5 odds.

Eagles Passing Game vs. Cardinals

The Eagles have a potential mismatch with their passing attack in Week 5 against the Cardinals. Philadelphia is ranked as the No. 4 pass offense DVOA, while PFF has them ranked as the best passing offense in the NFL. The Eagles also rank top five in yards per pass, yards per play, and Offense EPA.

Arizona is 28th in pass defense DVOA, while being ranked the worst pass defense by PFF. The Cardinals are also dead last in sacks and bottom 10 in yards per pass and yards per play. Arizona’s allowance of the league’s eighth-most yards per pass attempt (7.4), eighth-highest completion rate (68%), and fifth-most passing TD’s (8) set up the Eagles passing attack to put up some enormous statistics.

A.J. Brown leads the NFL in Air Yards share (46.1%), while Smith’s 35.3% Air Yards share is top 20. TE Dallas Goedert is also positioned to wreak havoc on Sunday with the Cardinals defense allowing the second-most catches and second-most yards to opposing TE’s thus far in 2022.

Patriots Rushing Game vs Detroit

The Patriots have a potential mismatch with their running game in Week 5 against the Lions. New England has the No. 1 graded rushing offense DVOA in the NFL and a top-five rushing offense per PFF. Detroit is allowing the most yards per rush in the NFL, while being ranked as the worst rushing defense DVOA.

Regardless of quarterback, the Patriots’ best means of generating Week 5 offense will be to ride both Rhamondre Stevenson and Damien Harris against a Lions defense surrendering 5.3 yards per carry. The Patriots RB duo should eat this week. After averaging 17 touches the past two weeks, Harris’ snaps are slightly down due to Stevenson’s passing game usage. Still, Harris remains the Pats’ favorite for scoring-position carries, as he has five rushes inside the opponent’s ten-yard line compared to Stevenson’s two. This rushing matchup warrants elite potential in Sunday’s mouth-watering draw.

Browns Rushing Game vs Chargers

The Browns have a potential mismatch with their running game in Week 5 against the Chargers. Cleveland is graded as the best rushing offense in the NFL by PFF. The Browns are top five in rushing offense DVOA while ranking top 10 in yards per rush, Offense EPA, and early down EPA.

Los Angeles allows the second-most yards per rush and the third-most points per play. Cleveland is second in the NFL in rushing attempts (149). The Browns are generating a run-heavy and run-dominant Offense thus far. This plan won’t stop against a Chargers defense that’s been shredded by enemy backs for 6.1 yards per carry and five all-purpose TD’s in four games.

The Chargers are now missing DE Joey Bosa. Chubb is an excellent bet to pad his AFC rushing yards lead of 459 rushing yards, while Kareem Hunt has handled at least 12 touches in all four games and is a quality bet here.

Best of luck handicapping Week 5 NFL matchups.
