With Caleb Williams out, it has been announced that second-year QB Tyson Bagent will start against Houston. Bagent signed with the Chicago Bears as an undrafted free agent at the end of the 2023 preseason. The young QB played in five games for the Bears last season, going 2-3 in those outings. Bagent threw for 859 yards and had a 65.7% completion in those games.
While Caleb Williams will not be hitting the field, there is no clear indication of whether Texans QB C.J. Stroud will be playing. There has been no formal announcement that Stroud will sit the first preseason game out. However, Houston coach DeMeco Ryans simply said, “We’ll see,” when asked about Stroud potentially suiting up. Without Stroud or other Texans starters, it will be backups versus backups.

Chicago went 7-10 during the 2023-2024 season and finished at the bottom of the NFC North. The team has made major roster improvements, including adding WR Keenan Allen and RB D’Andre Swift during the offseason. However, these additions won’t showcase their talents at the NFL Hall of Fame game.
The Texans are up in the air for if any of their starters will be competing. If the starters take to the field for a few snaps, the edge will be on Houston’s side. The Texans are coming off of a 10-7 season, claiming the top of the AFC South and culminating in a trip to the divisional round of the playoffs. Stroud won NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year after throwing for more than 4,000 yards. Texans defensive end William Anderson Jr. won Defensive Rookie of the Year.
Based on last season’s performance alone, the Texans are going into this matchup more poised for the preseason win.
