NFL CHRISTMAS PLAYER PROPS: GIANTS AT EAGLES
Darren Waller over receiving yards
Waller’s return from injury last week was encouraging, as the TE reeled in four catches for 40 yards. He didn’t appear to be limited in movement or snap count, making me think his over is worth a look.
The Eagles defense has also been shredded against tight ends, most recently by Jake Ferguson in Week 14 when he tallied 72 receiving yards on five catches. Backing Waller’s over will always be risky, given his injury history, but I’m willing to take a shot since he’s facing a defense that ranks 29th in DVOA against TEs. Howie Roseman has been reluctant to use resources on the linebacker and safety position until this season, and now the defense is suffering. Even with the Shaquille Leonard and Kevin Byard additions, I like Waller to go over this number.
Tommy DeVito over rushing yards
The Eagles’ run defense has been lackluster this season, ranking 16th in rushing success rate. They haven’t been tested by many rushing quarterbacks this season outside of Josh Allen in Week 14, and he burned them for 81 rushing yards and two scores in the game.
Against the Packers in Week 14, Brian Daboll made Devito a focal point of the offense. The rookie quarterback tallied a season-high ten carries for 71 yards against Green Bay. Given Allen’s success against them, I see no reason why Daboll wouldn’t attack the glaring weakness with DeVito. Remember that Daboll left the Bills organization to become the Giants’ head coach. If there’s anyone who will steal successful plays from the Bills and use them against the Eagles, it’s him.
Last year, when the two teams faced off, Daniel Jones and Tyrod Taylor combined for 63 rushing yards in the first matchup. In the second game, when Davis Webb got the nod under center, he scampered for 41 yards and a score. Running with the quarterback is part of the plan against the Eagles since Daboll has been the coach.
Aiding the over here is DeVito’s willingness to use his legs when nothing has been open on passing plays. He can always eclipse this number if designed runs fail when forced off script.
Dallas Goedert over receiving yards
Goedert has consistently gotten targets since returning from injury, accumulating 13 while reeling in eight catches for 60 yards the past two weeks. The high target share aligns well for a breakout game soon, and it could come against New York. The Giants’ defense ranks first in DVOA against TEs; however, that number is slightly inflated from games against the Dolphins and Patriots. In both games, they goose-egged opposing tight ends. Hunter Henry wasn’t even targeted against them, which is absurd considering Bill O’Brian’s reliance on the position.
The Giants’ defense has scuffled against offenses with top-tier tight ends such as Zach Ertz, George Kittle, and Logan Thomas. Thomas notched two of his better games of the season against them, going over 50 yards in both. Against the Saints last week, they allowed eight receptions for 64 yards and two touchdowns to the position; however, they were without star receiver Chris Olave, who was inactive for the game.
