Panthers at Bears Anytime Touchdown Scorer Strategy
Overall, scoring in the NFL is low. Unders this season are hitting at about 62% clip, even with reduced totals across the league. As a result, feature players on the offense become more valuable and predictable, while dart throws for touchdown odds are less of a premium. Considering the Bears own the Panthers’ first-round pick, Chicago would really like to see a victory here. Before the trade deadline, they added star pass rusher Montez Sweat, bolstering the pass rush.
Lately, rookie quarterback Bryce Young has struggled. The Panthers haven’t cracked 16 points since coming off their bye against two less-than-daunting defensive units. The Bears offer a bit softer test, although Sweat adds a new threat. Carolina’s receiving corps is among the least threatening in the NFL after sending DJ Moore to Chicago this offseason. So, we’ll follow the target share even more on Thursday.
Usually, I look first to red and green zone opportunities to locate touchdown scorers. After all, getting work around the goal line is the best way to find pay dirt. However, only six teams in the NFL have fewer red zone attempts per game than the Panthers (2.6), and only two have a lower touchdown rate in the red zone (Giants, Steelers).
Scoring opportunities for Carolina are truly barren.
And continuing to lose won’t even benefit the Panthers much for the NFL Draft. Chicago owns Carolina’s first-round pick.
Panthers Bears ATTD Scorer Bets
WR Adam Thielen ()
Even in Year 10, Thielen has been a bastion of production. He’s out-targeted the next player on the Panthers by more than double (76 vs. 34) and brought in triple the number of receptions (62 vs. 20). Granted, Young’s spray chart around the goal line is highly inconsistent.
In the last two games, Tommy Tremble and DJ Chark found pay dirt despite just two receptions and fewer than 10 yards apiece. Only four defenses have allowed a higher passing success rate than the Bears (50.3%) over the last four weeks. So, in this case, we’re chasing overall volume.
No Touchdowns or Under 1.5 Touchdowns Scored
Even against the 30th-ranked defense in EPA this season, I have doubts this Panthers offense can score. Instead of throwing darts at Tremble and Chark, you could attack the number of touchdowns scored for Carolina.
DraftKings Sportsbook offers under 1.5 touchdowns scored by the Panthers at +115. Targeting 0-11 total points scored by the Panthers has a +225 price tag. In my opinion, that is the best relative value – and under 7.5 points scored at +550. These are all better odds than the infinite frustration that comes with attempting to locate which rotational pass catcher finds the end zone in this horrid offense.
Starting RB Chubba Hubbard has just 14 carries inside the red zone. That ranks outside the top 20 in the NFL, and we already highlighted how few RZ opportunities the Panthers get anyway. Miles Sanders is questionable to suit up, and Young isn’t a rushing threat by any stretch.
