How The Ravens Got Here
Lamar Jackson turned in one of his best seasons of his career in 2023. Jackson, now the runaway favorite to win his second MVP, led the Ravens to the AFC’s top overall seed and a first-round bye. He improved as a passer, posting career-bests in completion rate (67%) and yards per attempt (8.0). While the rushing prowess was still definitely there, offensive coordinator Todd Monken also helped open the offense up. With Mark Andrews down for the final stretch of the year, receivers Zay Flowers, Odell Beckham Jr., and Rashod Bateman really blossomed.
As has been the case under John Harbaugh, Baltimore finished the deal with defense. Baltimore finished second in the league behind Cleveland in EPA per play thanks to the now-highly sought after scheme of Mike MacDonald. The Ravens lost just one non-divisional game all season and all four losses were by seven or fewer points.
How The Texans Got Here
CJ Stroud set rookie records en route to an AFC South title and the Texans’ first playoff bid in four seasons. In that first game, Houston handed it to the Browns 45-14, scoring two defensive touchdowns. Stroud looked perfect and poised, carving up the league’s No. 1 defense. The Texans roll into their toughest game of the season in Baltimore against the Ravens – can Stroud repeat his magic on the road?
Perhaps most importantly, Houston returned two key defenders against the Browns: Will Anderson and Derek Stingley Jr. Anderson – a Defensive Rookie of the Year frontrunner – wreaked havoc on the Browns’ offensive line while Stingley shut down Amari Cooper after he went for 265 yards in the teams’ first matchup in Week 16.
