How The Buccaneers Got Here
In their first year post-Tom Brady, the Buccaneers found gold in Baker Mayfield and clawed their way atop the NFC South. For the third straight year – and the second with fewer than 10 wins – the Bucs host an NFC Wild Card game. Tampa skirted by a favorable schedule, going 4-2 against its division, arguably the weakest in football. But they also host an Eagles team with plenty of questions heading into the postseason.
Opportunity arises for the pass game led by Mike Evans and Chris Godwin. Evans added another chapter to his Hall of Fame career track, hitting 1,000 receiving yards in a 10th straight season. The Eagles finished the season 30th in pass EPA from Week 8 on.
How The Eagles Got Here
The defending NFC champions fell into an issue defensively toward the end of the year. While Jalen Hurts continued to play good football, 2023 was a step down from his MVP-caliber season last year. In their Week 18 matchup against the Giants, star receiver AJ Brown went down with an injury and FanDuel Sportsbook pulled their initial opening line. It was reposted not long after at -2.5 in favor of Philly.
Jalen Carter sat in the driver’s seat for the Defensive Rookie of the Year heading into the final week, but was a lone bright spot on the stop unit. Contrary to last year’s defense that set all-time sack records, this year’s Eagles’ defense rolled into the final weekend ranked 30th in EPA per play. With the NFC East still in their grasp, Philly collapsed, getting blown out by the Giants to land in the five spot.
