Haason Reddick

Offseason acquisition Haason Reddick has held out of the New York Jets’ training camp since it began last month because of a contract dispute. According to multiple reports, the outside linebacker has now requested a trade. If Reddick’s holdout lingers, would that dampen the Jets’ pass rush and their AFC East hopes? Let’s dig in.

Per our AFC East betting report, the Jets’ odds of winning the division have shrunk in recent months. As of this writing, their best odds are +185 at Fanatics Sportsbook. Along with Aaron Rodgers’ return, New York’s elite defense bolsters its AFC East hopes.

Its refined pass rush has plenty to do with that. Developing Quinnen Williams, drafting Jermaine Johnson and Will McDonald, and nabbing defensive tackle Javon Kinlaw help deliver plenty of firepower beyond the aforementioned Reddick.

Be it up the middle with Williams or off the edge with Johnson and McDonald, the Jets’ defensive front should generate their fair share of pressures and sacks because of their elite trio of cornerbacks: Sauce Gardner, DJ Reed, and Michael Carter.

Jets general manager Joe Douglas shares this sentiment, noting that the front office won’t give into Reddick’s lofty trade demands.

“We have informed Haason that we will not trade him, that he is expected to be here with his teammates, and that he will continue to be fined per the CBA if he does not report,” Douglas said in a statement on Monday. “Since the trade discussions back in March, we have been clear, direct, and consistent with our position. Our focus will remain on the guys we have here as we prepare for the regular season.”

Reddick was acquired from the Eagles in exchange for a conditional third-round pick in March. Philadelphia responded by inking former Jets defensive end Bryce Huff to a three-year, $51.1 million deal. According to Pro Football Focus, Huff was the 11th-best pass rusher at his position in 2023, ahead of Maxx Crosby, Khalil Mack, and Jadeveon Clowney.

New York’s defensive front will be fine without Huff, and the team’s overall ceiling is in the same boat. Nevertheless, Reddick’s prolonged absence could haunt the Jets’ decision to part ways with Huff.
