What Group Is The Netherlands In?
Group D houses the Netherlands, and it’s considered one of the tougher groups, if not the toughest. None of the four competitors land worse than 28th (Poland) in the FIFA world rankings. Austria is close in rank at 25th. Unfortunately for the Dutch, the real bear comes in the form of France, which ranks second in the world and swept the Netherlands in qualifying.
Up to three teams can advance into the knockout phase of the Euro 2024 bracket. During the group stage, teams earn points for wins (three) and draws (one). Whichever two teams accumulate the most points in the group will advance. Additionally, the four highest-scoring No. 3 finishers will advance. So, if the Netherlands finishes third, their fate depends on how they compare to the third-place finishers in the other groups. They’ll likely be in good shape, considering they’re considered one of the stronger teams, but it’s no guarantee in a tough group, where accumulating high goal difference won’t be easy.

How Netherlands Qualified for Euro 2024
The Netherlands was drawn into Group B, where things went swimmingly for the Dutch … except for when they lined up across from France. In two matches against the French, the Netherlands got buried 6-1, including a 4-0 rout on the road. However, the Dutch won each of their other six matches to easily secure a second-place standing and automatic advancement to the main tournament. They compiled 17 goals and conceded 7 for a +10 differential.

Notable Players
Two of the most decorated players on the team are Memphis Depay and Frenkie de Jong. Unfortunately for fans of the Dutch, neither player appears to be entering the tournament at 100% health. A recent ESPN report described them both as likely to play, but the team is unsure if they can handle a heavy load of minutes. Both play for top-level Spanish clubs, and Depay has racked up an impressive 44 goals and 90 caps.
Look out for young striker Cody Gakpo as well. The 25-year-old is still a bit green (23 caps) but has netted nine times already, including three straight games in the 2022 World Cup.
Experienced back-liners Virgil van Dijk and Daley Blind anchor the defense. They have 66 and 106 caps, respectively, with the former serving as captain as well.
