The Ohio State Buckeyes aren’t used to having to worry about the Indiana Hoosiers. For years, this was as close to an automatic win as it got for Ohio State, which would take over the Hoosiers’ stadium whenever it visited Bloomington. But those days are over, as the Hoosiers are the defending Big Ten and national champions, as well as owners of a 20-game winning streak. More importantly, they’ve shown that they can stop Ohio State, having done it last year in the Big Ten title game. With both defenses looking sharp, this has all the makings of a back-and-forth battle. We review our Ohio State vs. Indiana prediction, break down the odds of this Big Ten contest and provide our picks for this game.

It’s been a long time since Ohio State faced Indiana coming off a loss to the Hoosiers in the previous meeting. The last time it happened was 1989, which was the year after Ohio State’s last losing season. That used to be what it took for Indiana to have a chance against Ohio State, as the Hoosiers had beaten the Buckeyes just twice in 74 years.

It’s a different time in Bloomington now. The Hoosiers not only expect to win under Curt Cignetti; they’ve proven that they can go toe-to-toe with Ohio State and come out the winner. Last year in the Big Ten championship game, Indiana beat the Buckeyes 13-10, and more impressively, it clearly wasn’t a fluke.

The Hoosiers don’t look as strong as last season, but they still look like a Big Ten title contender. Just as important, they’re playing with a real home field advantage for the first time in decades in this matchup. For years, Indiana would wait until Ohio State visited Bloomington to take its football media guide photo, given that both teams wore red and the athletic department could count on Ohio State fans to show up and take over the stadium. That isn’t going to happen this time; it’s a genuine home game for Indiana and arguably the biggest one their stadium has ever seen.

Ohio State vs. Indiana Odds

The public believes that the Hoosiers aren’t quite as good as the Buckeyes anymore. Indiana looked shaky at Nebraska, and that seems to have pushed public money toward the visitors. Ohio State started as a favorite of 1.5 points, but the line is now at -3 with 75% of bets coming in on the Buckeyes. However, that's a sign that late money came in on the Hoosiers; the line on Friday sat at Ohio State -3.5.

Indiana has had no success against Ohio State in home games. The Hoosiers are just 4-10 ATS and 0-14 SU in the Buckeyes’ past 14 trips to Bloomington. But it must be noted, none of those came under Curt Cignetti. Cignetti beat the Buckeyes straight up as a four-point underdog at the Big Ten title game in Indianapolis, in front of a mostly split crowd.

Here’s a breakdown of the lines, with the best odds coming at DraftKings.

These numbers indicate expectations for a defense-first, lower scoring game. Both defenses have a history of holding the other one under control; two of the past three meetings have seen less than 30 points scored. The oddsmakers believe Ohio State is about 6.5 points better than Indiana on a neutral field. The implied probability of this game says Indiana has a 40% chance to win the game. That’s better than expected for home underdogs, if you’re betting the moneyline.

Ohio State has played inconsistent football away from Columbus this season. That’s hardly unexpected, given the quality of their opposition on the road. However, it’s something the Buckeyes have to solve, given what they still have coming. After facing Indiana, Ohio State still has to go to USC and Nebraska, and with a loss to Texas on the resume, the Buckeyes do not have much margin for error.

One of the keys to this game will be whether Julian Sayin and Jeremiah Smith can actually do some damage against the Indiana pass defense. Last year, Sayin had to force decisions he wasn’t ready for, which meant Smith’s yards weren’t worth all that much. Smith caught eight balls for 124 yards in Ohio State’s loss to Indiana last season, but the Buckeyes only scored 10 points.

That game exposed a key weakness in Ohio State’s attack. The Buckeyes do not run the ball well in big games. Indiana was one of three times last year where Ohio State ended up with less than 100 rushing yards. The other two were a loss to Miami and a narrow win over Texas, and Ohio State didn’t crack 14 points in any of them.

This year, the problem hasn’t been fixed: Ohio State once again failed to top 100 yards in the loss to Texas. With Indiana averaging just 2.3 yards per carry allowed on the ground, Ohio State has to find a way to keep drives going.

Indiana ranks second in the Big Ten in rushing yards per game this year. The Hoosiers average 6.1 yards per carry, tied with UCLA and Iowa for the league’s most effective ground teams. They’re used to keeping the ball on the ground and letting quarterback Josh Hoover attack when he needs to attack.

That’s one reason Hoover doesn’t yet have an interception. However, this game likely will require him to do more than not lose it. Indiana hasn’t yet played an opponent who can force Hoover to make plays to win, and Ohio State represents that first real test.

The Hoosiers successfully took plays when they needed them against Ohio State last year, proving that the moment wasn’t too big for them. Now they need to follow that same path to victory.

Ohio State vs. Indiana Prediction: Under 50.5 (-110)

The Indiana offense isn’t quite as good as it was a year ago. But the Indiana defense has still been solid. Ohio State’s offense also has two key problems: it doesn’t run the ball very well, and Ryan Day tends to get conservative in close games.

That didn’t happen two years ago in Columbus because Indiana didn’t yet have a team on Ohio State’s level. Now it does, and both sides know it. Ohio State is likely to play this game more conservatively as a result.

That tends to mean longer drives and fewer points, which should keep both teams somewhere around the 20s.
