Year two of the Bill Belichick era takes North Carolina to the Emerald Isle, where the Tar Heels hope for a much better start than last year. The expected benefits of hiring the NFL legend never materialized, as Carolina crashed to a 4-8 season. And after ending the year with three losses to in-state rivals, Carolina fans enter this UNC vs. TCU season opener fearing the worst.

This matchup isn’t likely to ease any fears in Chapel Hill. The Heels face the same TCU squad that obliterated them last season, claiming a 48-14 decision. And while Carolina has faced plenty of offseason turmoil, TCU has become far more consistent. The Frogs have won nine games in consecutive years, and Sonny Dykes seems to have hit his stride in Fort Worth.

Belichick made a splashy hire on offense, opting to bring in Bobby Petrino. The Heels need the help, as they averaged just 19.3 points per game last year. Not once did they top 27 points against an FBS opponent in 2025.

That might not change in the defense-friendly environment of Ireland. Aviva Stadium lends itself to lower-scoring games, and there’s plenty of rain in the forecast for Saturday. The more disciplined team is likely to come away with the win.

Here’s a look at this UNC vs. TCU matchup to open the college football season.

UNC vs. TCU Prediction

Best Bet: Under 47.5 (DraftKings, -112)

There’s no getting around the Irish rain. On a grass field that’s far more used to soccer than American football, the field conditions will likely get worse as the game continues.

That favors defenses and it favors a ground game. Last year, it didn’t matter what TCU tried against North Carolina; everything worked. The Heels allowed 7.4 yards per carry, and TCU returns leading rusher Jeremy Payne. Expect the Frogs to give him the ball throughout the contest as TCU looks to use the conditions.

North Carolina’s defense should be improved, but the offense was truly ugly last year. The Heels only managed to top 20 points four times in 11 games against FBS competition last year. Petrino should improve the Heels a little, but they’ve got a long way to go. Odds are, Carolina’s offense isn’t going to handle the conditions well. If the Heels don’t do their share of the scoring, this total isn’t going to happen.

TCU has two ways it can win this game. The first is to try to attack through the air with Jaden Craig, who comes in after a fine year at Harvard. That’s probably not going to happen because of the conditions. Craig will have to pick his spots when he does choose to throw.

The second is on the ground, and Payne is the most stable part of the offense. The conditions and the likely game script favor him to have a big day. TCU will likely use Payne in the second half to keep the chains moving and the clock running.

If Payne gets his yards, the Frogs will cover a reasonable spread.
