NCAAF NC State vs Virginia: Predictions, How To Watch and Best Bets

This game was originally supposed to be played in Brazil, but logistical issues scrapped those plans for NC State vs. Virginia. Instead, the longtime ACC rivals will meet in Charlottesville as normal.

But that might not help the home side. Virginia has lost six of seven to State, and Wolfpack coach Dave Doeren is 4-0 against the Cavaliers. That includes last season, when the Cavaliers went to Raleigh and lost by four.

And although the Cavaliers made the ACC title game last season, they’ve got a new quarterback learning the offense in Beau Pribula. That’s not the case on the visiting sideline, where CJ Bailey projects as one of the top signal callers in the ACC.

Add it up, and there’s a case that the wrong team might be favored in this matchup. Even though Virginia is at home, that doesn’t look like enough to swing the NC State vs. Virginia matchup in the Cavaliers’ direction.

NC State vs. Virginia Prediction

Best Bet: NC State +4.5 (FanDuel, -115)

The line has moved since opening at Virginia -5.5, which says that the public isn’t buying the initial spot. There’s still value on the visitors, just not as much as it would have been. However, it’s important to buy early in case the line reaches the critical number of -3.

State will have to play better on defense this year. The Pack got gashed for 527 yards of offense, but survived for a 35-31 win. They hit the transfer portal hard, and they should be a better unit overall for it. It also helps that Virginia is breaking in a new offense. There’s a reason teams like to start the year with a weak opponent; it lets them iron out the kinks.

Virginia hasn’t had time to do that on offense. It takes a lot longer to do that on offense, which favors NC State here. There’s an argument for taking the Wolfpack on the moneyline, but with the game in Charlottesville, taking the points offers the most value.

Bailey can win the game for NC State either with his legs or with his arm. The thinking is that he’ll try to win it with his arm. The conditions in Charlottesville will be excellent, and he’s got a much deeper knowledge of the playbook than his counterpart Pribula will.

State doesn’t need to slow the game down, and it doesn’t like to play that way anyway. The total is high enough that Bailey can sling the ball for most of the game and still come in under the expected point total. Last year seems to be an outlier; expect a tighter defensive battle this time around.
