The moment Lane Kiffin bolted Oxford for Baton Rouge, the upcoming LSU vs. Ole Miss game became appointment viewing for the entire SEC.

Kiffin’s exit was one of the messiest college football has seen in decades. He left a team that was in the playoff for a conference rival that had crashed to a middling season, in part because he felt he could have more success at LSU. Considering that he was just four wins from a national title at Mississippi, it’s hard to imagine a bigger slap in the face to Ole Miss.

Pete Golding took the reins in Oxford, won two games and bowed out in the semifinals against Miami. A fair amount of the Rebels who didn’t follow Kiffin to LSU are back, and they’ve not forgotten the feelings of last year. Nor has the Ole Miss fan base, which will be in full force for this game.

LSU looked more impressive in the opener, but it also faced what seems a lesser opponent. Mississippi went play for play with Louisville, which appears much stronger than the Clemson team that LSU pasted.

The books believe that the margin has swung enough to make the Tigers favorites. But with a fired-up home crowd and the most talented player on the field, LSU vs. Ole Miss looks like a spot to take Trinidad Chambliss and the points.

LSU vs. Ole Miss Prediction

Best Bet: Ole Miss +3 (BetMGM, -110)

When all things look equal, take the quarterback who’s less likely to make mistakes. That’s Ole Miss quarterback Trinidad Chambliss, who has looked every bit as good as last year in the early going.

The Rebels have scored exactly 41 points in consecutive weeks. That’s not an accident; Ole Miss returned much of its talent on that side of the ball. Against Louisville, Chambliss hooked up with Deuce Alexander for 159 yards and two scores. Even if LSU tries to focus on him, the Rebels have enough weapons elsewhere to make them pay.

Sam Leavitt is a solid option on the LSU side, but he’s turnover prone. He’s thrown four interceptions already this season, and he’s listed as doubtful on the injury report. If he can’t go, LSU’s chances at a win drop significantly. Even if he is on the field, Ole Miss’ defense can make life hard for him.

LSU vs. Ole Miss Same Game Parlay (+568, BetMGM)

With LSU having quarterback issues, now’s not the time to bet big on the points. The Tigers might get there if they have Leavitt under center, but Husan Longstreet making his first start on the road doesn’t bode well for the Bayou Bengals’ offense.

Instead, stick with the Rebels’ passing attack to put up the numbers. Pete Golding isn’t going to show any mercy if the Rebels get a lead; Ole Miss will keep throwing whether or not LSU can keep up. Chambliss should get his numbers as the Rebels look to give their fans what they want to see.
